Google Releasing Free IMAP for Gmail

by Jason Rybka on Oct.25, 2007, under BlackBerry, Cell Phones, On the Web

I’ve been using a BlackBerry for several years now, and while I love the device itself, without BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) it seems that the device has a bit too many limitations in regards to syncing data across multiple applications.

Yesterday however, the folks over at Google (Gmail in particular) announced that they are releasing IMAP for cell phones and other devices, and IMAP in general. Basically, what this means is that now you’ll be able to make changes to your emails in your BlackBerry or cell phone, on the web, and on your email client (such as Outlook). But the best part of the whole deal (aside from it being free) is that you’ll be able to see those changes reflected across all of the applications.

They say if you don’t see the IMAP feature in your Gmail setting at the moment, then look in a couple of days as they are rolling it out as quickly as possible. You can get more information on Gmail IMAP here (the Gmail developer blog).

Oh I’ve been checking almost all day, but they haven’t released it on my end just yet. Once they do release it I’ll update you on it’s usage, and of course my thoughts on it!

This is great news! We will be now able to (sync) across multipel devices. However do you think that we will also be able to (sync) our calanders as well? If so that would be nice.

So finally IMAP is available within my Gmail account. I’m just finished setting it up on my laptop (since I am confined to bed post-surgery)…. so far so good. I think i’m gonna like not having to worry about wether ‘this or that’ email was on ‘this or that’ computer! I’ll post a short write-up about the results once I’ve spent some time with this on more than one pc.

Yeah I figured let me add this is as another comment, since I really don’t feel ready to write a full review of the IMAP Google service. Basically, its cool to be able to access the folders from any PC, but when using Outlook 2007 it seems the delete button dual deletes. In other words, it deleted the message you are deleting, and sometimes the one below it, and since delete is forever, not a good thing.

This sounds cool, I will have to get this! It would be great for me because I am a student and am always between multiple computers.
