iLiveMath Winter Sports for 1st to 6th grade on the iTunes App Store

by Jason Rybka on Feb.20, 2010, under Mac

Sacramento, California – iHome Educator today is pleased to announce the release of iLiveMath Winter Sports 1.0, a new collaborative educational math and winter sports app for Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. “iLiveMath Winter Sports” follows “iLiveMath Animals of Africa”. Third in the series is ‘iLiveMath Animals of Asia’ which is in development for launch in the Year of the Tiger.

Each app in the series will focus on different themes such as animals, countries, special events, and fun topics which will blend math with the world. Going beyond math equations and flash cards, iLiveMath will test students with illustrative questions. Students will be challenged with their applied math skills. This second app will test different levels of addition, subtraction, multiplication, distribution, and averages as well as build a student’s confidence in completing word problems.

In Winter Sports, various common and not so common winter sports are used in a fun and educational manner. For example “ice swimming” and “skibobbing” as well as “sledding” and “skating” are used to challenge kids in applied math.

Abby, 11 year old student and Quality Assurance Engineer of the company said with a smile, “I would like to try skibobbing because I love riding my bike and it would be fun to ride it in the snow on skis… I just don’t want too sharp of a slope! Thinking about ice swimming makes me shiver so no to ice swimming”.

Three levels of difficulty can be configured to help students from first through sixth grade as they move through different operations and challenge the student from addition, subtraction, to multiplication. Averaging concepts are introduced in Level 3 for 2 to 5 numbers.

The app also includes social networking features that support collaborative learning. Educators and students can track and review test results through email and blogs which automatically tally correct, incorrect, and unanswered counts as well as percentage of correct/incorrect answers. Furthermore, individual questions can be shared on Twitter as a fun social networking feature.

Example Tweets:
* We watched 90 freestyle skiing and another 87 skijoring kids. How many total kids did we see? @iHomeEducator #iLiveMath
* If there are 98 ice swimming and another 18 snowball fighting kids, what is the sum? @iHomeEducator #iLiveMath
* Four judges give a snowboarder style points of 40, 8, 28, and 4. What is the average? @iHomeEducator #iLiveMath

iLiveMath app series follows the MathSpinK, 1, 2, and 3 series, launched in November 2009.

Alicia Bayer, Mankato Homeschooling Examiner, writes “MathSpinK focuses mainly on counting, through four games children can play. The games involve interactive spinners and pictures of trains, princesses, painted hands and the 12 days of Christmas. Children will learn to count with fingers, princess accessories, train cars and the 12 days of Christmas.”

Arlene Lee, co-founder and Chief Mom, said, “As a parent and educator of three young children, we strive to and have carefully developed mobile applications based upon the child’s grade level and interests. We’ve seen our own children benefit a great deal and we hope that our applications will help your children find learning to be new and fun as well!”

Alicia Bayer’s Bio:
Alicia Bayer and her husband homeschool their four children (ages two to eleven) in Westbrook, Minnesota. Alicia is the Mankato Homeschool Examiner and also blogs about their homeschool life.

Device Requirements:

iLiveMath Animals of Africa from iHome Educator on iTunes App Store

by Jason Rybka on Feb.20, 2010, under Mac

Sacramento, California – iHome Educator today is pleased to announce the release of iLiveMath Animals Of Africa 1.1, a new collaborative educational math and zoology app for Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. “iLiveMath Animals of Africa” is the first in a series of innovative word problem applications. “iLiveMath Winter Sports” is currently in review and “iLiveMath Animals of Asia” is in development for launch in the Year of the Tiger.

Each app in the series will focus on different themes such as animals, countries, special events, and fun topics which will blend math with the world. Going beyond math equations and flash cards, iLiveMath will test students with illustrative questions. Students will be challenged with their applied math skills. This first app will test different levels of addition, subtraction, multiplication, percents, and order of operations as well as build a student’s confidence in completing word problems.

“iLiveMath Animals of Africa” brings math to life by describing a group of animals as a coalition of cheetahs, parade of elephants, or a dazzle of zebras. There are 26 animal types from Africa (additional updates will include more African animals and problems). The app automatically generates over one million possible combinations of questions.

Three levels of difficulty can be configured to help students from first through sixth grade as they move through different operations and challenge the student with equations from single digit to triple digits.

The app also includes social networking features that support collaborative learning. Educators and students can track and review test results through email and blogs which automatically tally correct, incorrect, and unanswered counts and percentages. Furthermore, individual questions can be shared on Twitter as a fun social networking feature.

iLiveMath app series follows the MathSpinK, 1, 2, and 3 series, launched November 2009, which takes users through a whirlwind of spinners to learn counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and inequalities. The MathSpin1 app was enhanced with Chinese and Mayan numbers to blend world culture with mathematics.

Karin Piper, Charter Schools Examiner, writes “The cool mobile applications were developed by this mom and dad team while teaching their own children math concepts. It was just a matter of time before word got out about the product and requests started pouring in by learning hungry customers… Today, the couple’s 11 year old is the organization’s Quality Assurance Engineer, and has the fine job of testing the product and developing new ideas. The younger siblings, ages 4 and 5, represent the end-users as testers of the products. It is safe to say these youngsters are learning more than math skills by being involved in the family’s joint business and education venture.”

Arlene Lee, co-founder and Chief Mom, said, “As a parent and educator of three young children, we strive and have carefully developed mobile applications based upon the child’s grade level and interests. We’ve seen our own children benefit a great deal and we hope that our applications will help your children find learning to be new and fun as well!”

Karin Piper’s Bio:
Karin is a speaker, school choice advocate and author of award winning Charter Schools: The Ultimate Handbook for Parents. Karin provides communications and tools necessary for parents to become informed decision makers in the expanding world of education options. She also works with various organizations in engaging with surrounding communities and creating dynamic relationships with families.

* iPhone and iPod touch
* Requires iPhone OS 3.1.2 or later
* The MathSpin and iLiveMath app series will also run on Apple’s iPad when released

Getting The Job Done – Notebooks for iPhone Adds Task Management

by Jason Rybka on Feb.19, 2010, under Mac

Salzburg, Austria – Alfons Schmid today is pleased to announce the release of Notebooks 3.1, which adds task management as a new module to its already proven note taking and file sharing capabilities. Notebooks’ approach offers several unique aspects:

* Notebooks integrates task lists and supportive documents. An important part of task management is the reference library, which holds background material and supportive information that helps make decisions. In Notebooks, reference libraries and task lists are integrated and always just a few taps apart.

* Notebooks can build hierarchies instead of showing tasks in flat lists. At some stage, a single task may evolve into a small project of its own, and the original project may quickly turn into a hierarchy of sub-projects. Notebooks’ structure helps to maintain the big picture and drill down on the detail when necessary.

* Notebooks describes tasks with more than just three words. Ideas can be phrased and developed freely, without being limited by a text box, because writing is one of Notebooks’ original purposes. Converting ideas to tasks or projects then requires no more than a few taps.

* Notebooks organizes projects, documents and notes in one place, which won’t interrupt the train of thought when ideas are produced and broken down into tasks.

Notebooks is able to deliver these advantages by leveraging its already strong foundation: taking and organizing notes and sharing files. These underpinnings provide an environment to keep all important work, documents, knowledge and memories in a single application on the iPhone. Task management is a natural extension of this context and provides extra benefit for the users.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone and iPod touch
* Requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later
* 1.0 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Notebooks 3.1 is $5.99 (USD) and available exclusively through the App Store in the Productivity category.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent – Teaser, Web Site and Pre-Order

by Jason Rybka on Feb.19, 2010, under Mac

Helsingborg, Sweden – From the makers of the Penumbra series comes a brand new survival horror game, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Today Frictional Games is happy to announce the release of the game’s web site and a first look at actual in-game footage, in the form of a horrifying teaser.

“We recently finished a massive testing session of the game to much success. With that behind us we now know how Amnesia will play like and what it takes to finish it. This means we feel confident in moving forward and sharing more juicy details about the game. This includes crucial things such as availability, pricing and what the game is all about.” – Thomas Grip, Co-founder.

Web site
General information about the game, screenshots and a teaser are the main additions to the heavily updated web site. We have also added information about how to pre-order and where the final game will be available for purchase. Check back for future updates with new screens, information and, as release draws closer, a demo. The web site also features something of a first in the history of computer games – the “pre-order-o-meter”. Watch as blood fill up for every new pre-order placed! If we reach 2000 pre-orders before end of May, new content will be added to the game.

Teaser
Take a deep breath and prepare yourself to experience the first real gameplay video released. This teaser gives a first look at what sort of experience we are aiming for when playing Amnesia, it lasts for over three minutes and consists of one single clip. The idea is to convey as clearly as possible that the player is in control of the character throughout the whole game. There are no cut-scenes or any sort of moments where control is taken away to force the narrative forward.

Status of Amnesia: The Dark Descent
The game is now up and running on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X! All platforms have participated in the recent testing session and performed over expectations. We are pleased to announce that the game will get a simultaneous release on all platforms!

Many companies seem to view the PC as a “dying gaming platform” and we see this as a great opportunity. Amnesia is a modern 3D game that from the very beginning has been created with the PC in mind. It has modest demands on the PC hardware compared to recent console ports and because of this we are able to make sure a broader audience can experience the game as intended.

Release and availability
With an estimated release date of August 2010, you can pre-order it now for USD16 and save 20% on the release price of USD20. The pre-order is available at our own online store and is for the digital download version of the game. At the release in August the game will be available for purchase in just about any of the major online stores. Further details can be found at the Amnesia web site and more information will be released shortly. A boxed version for retail release is also planned and information will be released as it becomes available.

Frictional Games is a small independent game developer located in the south of Sweden or, to be more precise, located on the Internet – the company is office-free.
