You can experience the aesthetic splendor second-hand by checking out the gallery posted below. See if you can identify the games each painting is based on! (Spoiler alert: You’ll never , ever guess some of them. Not in a billion, trillion years.) Dragon Age Awakening: now with creepy Children!
by coirdov on Feb.05, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Felt like your copy of Dragon Age: Origins was missing something, eh? Say, maybe, slugs with demonically mutated children’s faces? Perfect — we’ve got just the trailer for you today, care of upcoming DA:O expansion Awakening , full of creepy-crawly things called “The Children.” There’s not much in the way of an explanation of exactly what or why they are, but there are some pretty awful birth pods full of (presumably) amniotic fluid — well, y’know, evil amniotic fluid (they’re bad guys, after all). Hopefully the Children aren’t working in concert with that terrifying blue dragon we saw last week

Sam & Max Season 1 on sale for $5
by coirdov on Jan.29, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
We’re not big fans of teaser pages, but we do wish there were a few more like the one hinting at more Sam & Max in 2010 . The site has now evolved beyond rambling about “a power-mad space gorilla” to … well, there’s still some rambling, but there’s also a real deal: The whole first season of Telltale’s Sam & Max for just $4.99. If you haven’t touched the series or just like buying things really, really cheap, now would be the time to act.

Mark Hamill talks about game voice acting, Batman role
by coirdov on Jan.06, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Mark Hamill has made a name for himself over the years with his game work, with high-profile roles in games like Full Throttle and Wing Commander 3 . Not to mention his legendary performance as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series , which he reprised for Arkham Asylum . But Mark Hamill already had a name, and it was “Luke Skywalker.” An interview with CVG suggests that the move was intentional.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 DLC pulls a Sue Storm on PSN, vanishes
by coirdov on Dec.29, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
PS3 heroes heeding the call of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 may have noticed all of the game’s DLC has been pulled from PSN. Users on the game’s official forums, the Hero HQ , and folks over at the official PlayStation boards are complaining all of the game’s DLC has up and vanished from PSN — something Joystiq can also confirm. So, what gives? Well, we don’t know right now, but we’ve put in word to both Sony and Activision and will let you know when we hear back. Sony Online Service aims to achieve brand loyalty
by coirdov on Nov.20, 2009, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Networking, Video Games, iPod
In an AP interview , Sony executive VP Kaz Hirai declared the upcoming Sony Online Service , which adds PSN-like features (possibly including game, music and movie downloads) to a wide variety of Sony devices, a major selling point. “That’s the kind of combination that I think is not seen anywhere else,” Hirai said. “That I think is where our core competence lies, and that’s a differentiator for Sony.” Additionally, Hirai told Business Week that Sony hopes to get the service into other devices next year and, “Earlier in the year would be a lot more preferable.” In the interview, Hirai said that the Sony Online Service would take the iTunes-like approach of registering users as soon as the device is powered on, to register their accounts immediately

Splinter Cell walkthrough video brings out the brutality
by coirdov on Oct.15, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
This four-and-a-half-minute walkthrough preview of Badass: The Game (a.k.a. Splinter Cell Conviction ) is not for the faint of heart. “We really wanted to bring out Sam’s brutality,” observes an unseen narrator, as the rogue agent stabs a terrorist in the hand in a torture scene that would make Jack Bauer feel at home. Certainly, Amnesty International wouldn’t approve of these tactics — but we’re a rather depraved bunch here at Joystiq HQ. It’s pretty clear Splinter Cell Conviction is one of our most anticipated games targeted for the crowded Q1 season next year
