PSP-4000 in advertisement deemed a ‘mistake’

by CoolBoySuborg on Dec.21, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Rumors, Video Games

Last week’s digital issue of MCV featured an advertisement for an accessory bundle mentioning the “PSP-4000.” The listing has since been described as being nothing more than a mistake. Negative Gamer contacted A4G, which placed the ad, and the company’s license manager said the mention of a new iteration for Sony’s handheld was a “mistake on [their] part.” The spokesperson was unaware of a new model. Rumors of the UMD-enabled PSP-4000’s existence have been floating around for a few months

Metareview: The Ballad of Gay Tony

by CoolBoySuborg on Oct.28, 2009, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Video Games

The second and final “Episode from Liberty City,” The Ballad of Gay Tony , has arrived. As the tale of Liberty City comes to a close, does The Ballad of Gay Tony present an exciting final act or an anti-climactic letdown? We’ll let the critics at large weigh in on this one: Game Informer ( 93/100 ): “While I preferred the tight-knit story of brotherhood and betrayal in The Lost and Damned, The Ballad of Gay Ton y delivers more explosive weapons, death-defying missions, and off-the-wall characters.

Dust 514 trailer: see the MMO FPS of the MMO

by CoolBoySuborg on Oct.09, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

If you like the setting of Eve Online , but don’t find the dense, economics-heavy gameplay scintillating , CCP is making Dust 514 just for you. You can still inhabit the Eve universe, but you’re pretty much just shooting guns at it instead of destroying financial systems. Unfortunately, while the kind of grim space setting is fairly unique for an MMO (as is just about everything about Eve ), it’s kind of … well-heeled in the FPS world.

What’s In A Name: WayForward Technologies

by CoolBoySuborg on Sep.21, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games, Windows

With its gorgeous A Boy and His Blob remake in the pipeline, WayForward has been on our minds quite a lot recently. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the answer to the real question: How did the company come up with its name? Our curiosity is now sated. “Back when we started in 1990, I happened to be reading a Douglas Adams book called Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. One of the lead characters in it is Gordon Way, who not only shares my surname, but also developed MIDI software for Windows, which happened to be a hobby of mine at the time.

by CoolBoySuborg on Sep.11, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Despite the copious amount of gigglebytes and Dilithium Crystals under the hood of the PS3, it’s never enough for developers. Their lot is constantly pushing envelopes and raising bars everywhere they go — and the fine folks at Naughty Dog are no exception. During a preview of Uncharted 2 at PAX , Naughty Dog’s Amy Hennig commented that the first Uncharted game only managed to utilize a third of the PS3’s power, but Naughty Dog has “maxed it out” for the sequel

NPD: Households with kids still the biggest game purchasers

by CoolBoySuborg on Sep.11, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Though the median age of video gamers has increased dramatically over the past decade, a recent report from the NPD Group shows that youngsters still possess a great deal of market dominance — according to the study , households with children ages 12 and under constitute 45 percent of the gaming industry’s total sales. Considering these tweens only make up 17 percent of the U.S. population, that’s a fairly large chunk of selling power. Still, it’s tough to completely trust these numbers — as we all know, 13-year-olds are vile, fraudulent creatures who are quick to shave a few years off their age in the pursuit of pure vanity
