January NPD: Mass Effect 2 debuts at #2, hardware is down
by diablonadz on Feb.11, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games
Sure, last month’s NPD numbers post had all sorts of green arrows plastered all about its form — this month, we knew things would go down. Little known fact: Christmas never occurs in January, and this year is no exception. Without Consumermas driving console adoption, numbers were down across the board; what’s not so obvious is that numbers were also down year-over-year

Civilized Sid Meier presenting revolutionary keynote at GDC 2010
by diablonadz on Jan.27, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Sid Meier , creator of Civilization and unwitting architect of countless break-ups over the past 20 years, will keynote the 2010 Game Developers Conference. Meier’s presentation will argue that “real-world, historical and mathematical facts cannot form the foundation of a successful game design,” but that “the driving force of a game’s design should be the psychology of the player.” Meier’s keynote will dig deep into psychology, showing designers that “egomania, paranoia and delusion” should be part of their toolkit. Hm, maybe Meier isn’t such an unwitting participant in all those divorces after all? GDC will take place March 9-13 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, and Meier will reveal his tips for mainlining e-crack to the brain on Friday, March 12. Civilized Sid Meier presenting revolutionary keynote at GDC 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 14:45:00 EST.

UK Bayonetta pre-order bonuses revealed
by diablonadz on Dec.01, 2009, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Video Games
We’re not sure why publishers decided that purchasing a game should be more difficult, but the recent trend of retailer exclusive pre-order goodies seems to be here to stay. Case in point: the various pre-order bonuses for Bayonetta in the UK. Those who pre-order at Play.com will receive the Bayonetta Climax Edition , pictured above on the left. Meanwhile, HMV pre-orders get a “Manga’s Leading Ladies” DVD, which features “full episodes, trailers and exclusive clips” of something .

Desert Bus for Hope raises more than $132,000 for Child’s Play
by diablonadz on Nov.27, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
After five days and 16 hours of playing the world’s most boring game, the Desert Bus for Hope crew has reached its final stop for the year, bringing in a staggering $132,392.94 to benefit the Child’s Play charity. With the third iteration of its annual marathon play session of “Desert Bus” — a mini-game from the unreleased Penn and Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors — comedy troupe LoadingReadyRun raised nearly $110,000 more than its first year. If you want to see just how brutal the experience was, you can try the game for yourself right here . It’s just the latest piece in a long line of evidence proving that a bunch of good-hearted gamers and Canadians with a brutal, masochistic streak can accomplish just about anything.

Review: LittleBigPlanet (PSP)
by diablonadz on Nov.17, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
The PSP version of LittleBigPlanet is two shoulder buttons and an analog stick away from being one of the greatest games on Sony’s portable platform. There were plenty of things I loved in the original LBP — frantic multiplayer, outstanding artistic and musical design, and an endless pool of community-generated content, to name a few — but all of the game’s delightful components relied heavily upon the strength of the its creation engine, and the aforementioned community’s willingness to master the tools they’ve been provided. While the PSP version of the game does an adequate job of transplanting these tools onto a portable console, a surprisingly large amount of that power and ease of use was sacrificed in the process. The level creation engine is functional , but doesn’t come close to the standard set by the original game

Borderlands devs heading out for midnight launches in Texas
by diablonadz on Oct.16, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
So, Gearbox and 2K may not have the pull to grant Borderlands with a nationwide mega midnight launch, but gosh-darn-it, they’re gonna keep a couple GameStops open late on October 19! For those in the DFW (Dallas Fort Worth, holla!), the developers will be showing up to sign copies (at least “five guys with sharpies”) — and they’ll bring some posters and T-shirts along, too. 2201 Preston Rd Plano, TX 75093-2306 6245 Rufe Snow Dr, Fort Worth, TX 76148-3321 The Plano location will have a “four-player LAN setup available to play starting around 9PM.” A Gearbox representative tells us they’ll “hopefully” have something set up at the Ft. Worth location as well. Borderlands devs heading out for midnight launches in Texas originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 06:00:00 EST

C&C 4: Tiberian Twilight screens shoot more beams than a Pink Floyd Laser Show
by diablonadz on Oct.14, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
While the subtitle could use some work , Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight ’s look is coming along nicely. EA recently deployed some new media from the game, all showing off the ongoing war between the Brotherhood of Nod and the GDI forces. Their conflict is eternal — kinda like Tom and Jerry , but with way less slapstick and lots moar lazorz. Hit up the gallery below for the new screens, which are oddly devoid of all that XP we saw in the last batch .
