Former EyeToy exec warns of the difficulties facing Natal, ‘Arc’

by eldetlems on Feb.08, 2010, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Software, Video Games

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz , Jamie MacDonald, former Vice President of Sony Worldwide Studios (the company responsible for EyeToy ), gave out a few pointers to Sony and Microsoft regarding their respective motion controllers . MacDonald warned that gamers are expecting more from the 360 and PS3’s motion gaming than they do from the Wii, due to both consoles’ beefier hardware.

Latest Red Dead Redemption screens sneak up and take us out

by eldetlems on Jan.23, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Alright, alright, not really — they’re just screenshots, folks! But these four new screens do most assuredly feature Red Dead Redemption ’s main hero (and his buddy Marshall Johnson) sneaking up on a variety of old West bad guys to, presumably, take them out — the folks at Rockstar claim that these shots are about “taking cover,” but we can see with our own eyes that they’re clearly about clandestinely poppin’ fools. We’ve still got a few more months before the game’s scheduled release date of April 27 , and as such, we’d be willing to bet this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Mr. Marston and his U.S

Joystiq highlights a game of the year 2009

by eldetlems on Dec.31, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Here it is, folks: The moment you’ve all been waiting for. Team Joystiq has been scouring the list of games that came out in 2009, attempting to pick the best of the best, then present them to our readership in an enumerated fashion. Unfortunately, we got bored with that, and instead started playing 2009: The Game , which is, in fact, a game of the year 2009. We apologize for the misleading headline. It’s more or less an “avoid-these-things-lest-you-die” game flash game which takes quick, topical jabs at the year’s low points.

Japanese retailers list PS2 reprint of Shadow of the Colossus

by eldetlems on Dec.15, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Retailers, Video Games

It seems Sony is attempting to drum up interest in Team Ico’s upcoming, Griffin-infused adventure, The Last Guardian , by showcasing its earlier opus to poor, unenlightened folks who missed it the first time around. The opus in question is Shadow of the Colossus , which, according to a Team ICO fan site , has been listed by a number of Japanese retailers to be reprinted and sold on February 4. Sadly, it didn’t get the God of War Collection treatment — the game’s still on its original platform, the PlayStation 2. If you were the speculatin’ type, you might think that The Last Guardian would be released not too much later than this reprint, ensuring that the warm, Team ICO-esque feeling would still be fresh in everyone’s minds. We’re more the wait-and-see types, so we plan on waiting and, shortly after that, seeing

Readers pick best webcomic: Assassin’s Edge

by eldetlems on Dec.12, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Is climbing Italy’s tallest structures a little too easy in Assassin’s Creed 2 ? We don’t think so — but when viewed through the bright red filter of Mirror’s Edge , which required a sequence of forty button presses to open a door , we can understand why you’d think that. Poor Faith’s skyscraper scaling envy was the subject of last week’s Webcomic Wrapup winner, ” Assassin’s Edge, ” from Virtual Shackles

by eldetlems on Dec.11, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Look, we know you’ve been waiting with bated breath for all those Hearts of Iron 3 content packs to arrive on Impulse, so we were glad to tell you that they’ve finally arrived. Sure, so did The Saboteur and X-COM , but we know you’re not concerned. We suppose it’s possible you’ll tire yourself out with the new Hears of Iron 3 content to the point that you’ll need a break, so we should probably point out that a mess of other games made it onto Stardock’s digital distribution platform this week. Being the good friends we are, we’ve dropped the whole list just after the break, just for you! Tony Hawk talks Ride sequel, confirms board for snowboarding and surfing games

by eldetlems on Nov.23, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games

[ Giant Bomb ] In the realm of games that cost over $100 released by Activision this holiday season (we’re counting four including the Prestige Edition Modern Warfare 2 pack), Tony Hawk Ride wasn’t one that we thought of as a hot ticket item . The man who lent his name to the series, however, has a different take, saying in a recent interview with GameSpot UK on the prospect of a sequel to Ride that “We have already started that process, but who knows what the future holds.” Additionally, like multiple people at Ride developer Robomodo have already intimated, Hawk confirms plans to put the game’s board to use in other places – specifically, the woefully underserved snowboarding and surfing game genres. Hawk even speaks of resurrecting one-shot last-gen game Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer , saying, “I always thought that Kelly Slater’s [ Pro Surfer ] was an underrated title for the PlayStation 2 … I thought that people didn’t really give it the attention it deserved.” And us, well, we’re still hoping that someone makes a bicycle peripheral so that we can finally get the reboot of Downhill Domination that we’ve been waiting for.

Project Natal price to launch with room to drop

by eldetlems on Oct.07, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Speaking at the First Annual Microsoft Open House in Manhattan yesterday, E&D Division prez Robbie Bach danced around the issue of pricing the company’s upcoming motion tech for Xbox 360. “Relative to Natal, we’ll see how the pricing/costs work out,” Bach said. “But I think people should expect it to be like other things: We work through the price curve, just like we have with other products.” Though muddled, Bach’s comment does not suggest that Natal will hit retail costing an arm and a leg (geddit?), but rather the device’s launch price will be set high enough for significant discounts to go into effect over time. Using Wii as the bad example, Bach emphasized that Nintendo’s launch price and its new discounted price aren’t notably different. “When you start at $249, I don’t know that a [price drop to] $199 — I don’t know how much difference that’s going to make in the marketplace,” Bach observed.
