by Joseph Rybka on Feb.16, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Reviews, Video Games
If you’re an avid follower of pre-release review scores for super anticipated titles, you’ve probably noticed the scattershot scores garnered by Final Fantasy XIII . Most critics’ biggest complaint with the game is its linearity — a qualm which the game’s director, Motomu Toriyama, claims to be a hang-up that’s native to Western audiences and reviewers. During a recent interview with Xbox World 360 magazine ( via CVG ), Toriyama explained, “we think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view.” He later added, “when you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like..

by Joseph Rybka on Feb.15, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
When THQ announced that the De Blob franchise would continue this year, we didn’t imagine it had anything this big in store for what we thought of as a semi-obscure Wii franchise. The publisher has partnered with the ” Syfy Channel ” (ugh) on a new banner called “Syfy Kids,” a multimedia initiative including web content, TV, and games — and De Blob is going to be featured heavily.

Darksiders’ hidden code reveals free copy of Red Faction Guerrilla
by Joseph Rybka on Feb.12, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Early copies of Darksiders contained an insert (see above) that quite explicitly asked buyers to not to throw it away — that’s what “do not discard” means. Today it was revealed that the code will net the bearer a free copy of Red Faction Guerrilla for PS3 or Xbox 360. The code will also grant them “a digital Hellbook disc featuring Darksiders art, videos, and other awesome stuff.” Yeah, that’s great but let’s get back to that whole “free game” thing

Kamiya keen on returning to Bayonetta, considering spin-off
by Joseph Rybka on Jan.22, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Speaking to Game Informer , Platinum Games’ Hideki Kamiya discussed the possibility of a sequel to Bayonetta . Kamiya noted that the Bayonetta team has “love” for the game, saying, “I don’t see anything wrong with Bayonetta 2 .” (If you’re reading this, Mr. Kamiya, neither do we.) He elaborated that he’d like to approach a sequel “from a different angle, in the form of a spin-off.” Game Informer goes on to speculate that a sequel could star Bayonetta’s rival, Jeanne

Score $5 million in funding for Gaikai
by Joseph Rybka on Jan.06, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
David Perry’s “It’s not OnLive ” service, Gaikai , recently gained $5 million in venture capital, a Security and Exchanges Commission filing shows. For the uninitiated, basically Perry wants to beam games directly into your house. We imagine the tech behind it is kinda like that crazy set-up the Riddler had running all over Gotham, hence the need for such a large sum of money.

by Joseph Rybka on Dec.23, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Interested in Resonance of Fate but afraid of being burned by another tri-Ace RPG? Sega released a demo of the gunplay RPG in Japan, with a tutorial that Siliconera reports is easy enough to follow along with even in Japanese.

New trailer reminds us that LOTR: Aragorn’s Quest exists
by Joseph Rybka on Dec.16, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
For the first time since the announcement of the game’s burial in the first quarter of 2010, WBIE has released new media for The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest . In case you’ve forgotten about the upcoming Wii/DS/PS2/PSP action-RPG, it’s a kid-friendly game starring a cuddly incarnation of Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn — and, in the Wii version, an equally huggable Gandalf (for a second player to handle). It seems that, even though you’re in the middle of a war , hacking up thousands of monsters as per, the game’s been approved for kids because your avatar has big feet. New trailer reminds us that LOTR: Aragorn’s Quest exists originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Dec 2009 02:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds .

‘Turbo’ movie trumps Natal, Sphere and Wii MotionPlus
by Joseph Rybka on Nov.25, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, On the Web, Video Games
We talked about the trailer for Turbo back in April, and now director Jarrett Conaway has put the entire short film up on the web for maximum watchability. While it’s a short film, it manages to make a movie about video games look like … a movie about video games (and not some overblown Bay-gasm).
