The BAFTA awards represent a rare opportunity to get the thrill of watching your favorite high-profile games rack up more plaudits long after the end of the year. They also represent the opinions of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, but whatever. The nominations for the 2009 awards have been released, with mostly unsurprising games occupying the “Best Game” category — Batman , Assassin’s Creed II , Modern Warfare 2 , Left 4 Dead 2 , Joystiq.com Game of the Year 2009 Uncharted 2 — and FIFA 2009 . In the ” people’s choice ” GAME Awards, all of the Best Game nominees but Left 4 Dead 2 make repeat appearances, joined by The Beatles: Rock Band , GTA Chinatown Wars , The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks , Street Fighter IV , and Wii Sports Resort . “Everyone’s” tastes are much more diverse! Last week, a US District Court judge denied Bethesda’s request for an injunction against Interplay, which would have prevented Interplay from selling its Fallout games — and stopped it from developing Project V13 , the Fallout MMO . The company released a short statement about the court case in the form of SEC Form 8-K , which is intended to provide information about major events to shareholders. Interplay is not happy to merely defend its rights to make and sell Fallout games: the statement reads that Interplay is going to continue pursuing “its Counter-Claims against Bethesda, including its claims for Breach of Contract, Tortious Interference with Prospective Economic Advantage, Rescission, Accounting and Declaratory Relief seeking an award of damages and other relief.” Interplay reportedly claims that Bethesda shopped the Fallout legacy games around to other publishers, telling them that Interplay no longer had the license, which constitutes “unreasonable interference” with Interplay’s property. What a tease: First we read on IGN that one of the the great untapped licenses, Voltron , would finally be made into a video game. But then we learn that it’s not only an iPhone game, but an iPhone game (iTunes link) that’s being ported to other phones.

Harmonix and MTV are billing next week’s Rock Band DLC update as a spooky, Halloween-themed selection, mostly due to the inclusion of some Rob Zombie classics and a new Wolfmother set (zombies and wolves are scary, right?). IndieCade 2009 was held in Culver City, CA this past weekend, and the local art galleries and restaurants were filled with independent games and their developers from all over the world. The festival billed itself as the “video game Sundance” and lived up to this self-made reputation, putting 29 different indie games on display, both throughout the weekend and during a Thursday night opening ceremony MC’d by Uncharted 2’s Richard Lemarchand (shown above with festival founder Stephanie Barish). We’ve rounded up the festival’s finalists in the gallery below. You may be familiar with a few of them, including Twisted Pixel’s The Maw and a selection of well-known iPhone titles, but all of these titles deserve your attention — and a playthrough!
