Indie games bundled on the cheap for V-Day

by MichelButeyko on Feb.13, 2010, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Video Games

So what if Sophie/Samuel didn’t return your request for a weekend getaway to that little bed and breakfast in New Hampshire? Wouldn’t you rather spend your weekend falling in love with a handful of indie games — And Yet it Moves , Auditorium , Aztaka , Eufloria , Machinarium , and Osmos — from an all-star list of developers? We knew you’d see our point! Besides, it’s only $20 — that’s way less than the price of two nights for two people at The Buttonwood Inn , not to mention a steal considering each game individually purchased would add up to 85 buckaroos. And hey, now you can spoil yourself with an extra large box of tissues and a matching ice cream tub

Readers pick best webcomic: Love in the Age of Dragons

by MichelButeyko on Feb.06, 2010, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Video Games

It was an awfully close week for the Webcomic Wrapup , with the top three finishing almost neck-and-neck; but a winner has been declared: Shyeah’s ” Love in the Age of Dragons .” We certainly appreciate the humor presented in Shyeah’s strip, but we’re afraid we’re putting a moratorium on Dragon Age comics from here on out. See, Mass Effect 2 is out now. That stuff is old hat . Second and third place went to Penny Arcade’s ” Here’s Your Reality Program ” and Brawl in the Family’s ” Hoy, Small Fry ,” respectively

Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Valley coming stateside in April

by MichelButeyko on Jan.31, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Considering the extent to which Farmville has enraptured the hearts and minds of 95 percent of the Facebook-using populace, we’re not surprised that Natsume has decided to bring yet another installment in the Harvest Moon franchise to the States. According to Siliconera , American store shelves will play host to Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Valley for the PSP in April. The game will task you with staving off the expansion of The Funland Corporation’s chain of amusement parks into your home town of Leaf Valley. You’ll do so in the most logical manner imaginable: By repeatedly performing various agricultural chores. Yeah, that’ll show ‘em! Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Valley coming stateside in April originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 31 Jan 2010 21:30:00 EST.

WSJ: Apple working with EA on ‘tablet’s game capabilites’

by MichelButeyko on Jan.21, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone, iPod

When a handful of video game outlets (including Joystiq) got invites to Apple’s much-hyped January 27th media event to unveil its ‘latest creation’ – rumored to be a tablet of some sort – it became rather obvious that whatever this creation is, it would have something to do with gaming. If a Wall Street Journal report this morning – detailing everything from book, magazine and newspaper partnerships to a TV subscription service – is to be believed, “Apple is also working with videogame publisher Electronic Arts Inc. to show off the tablet’s game capabilities, according to one person familiar with the matter.” Insomuch as this rumored tablet is a big-sized iPod Touch, and insomuch as the iPod Touch is totally the ‘ best portable device for gaming ,’ games are an obvious component of this mystery device, and the iPhone-friendly devs at EA are an obvious partner for Apple. Whether this has anything to do with EA Mobile’s announced support for suspected Apple Tablet-competitor, the Amazon Kindle, remains to be seen, but we’ve reached out to EA for comment

iPhone game devs band together for Haiti relief

by MichelButeyko on Jan.18, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone

It’s said that developers who work on the smallest platforms have the biggest hearts. … OK, no one says that, but we’re thinking about getting it started after reading about App Relief , a coalition of developers donating their proceeds to relief efforts in Haiti, which recently suffered a catastrophic earthquake. Launched by Josh Hernandez, CEO of bitFLIP developer Metamoorephosis Games, the effort is now 10 games strong, with all the developers (so far) donating 100 percent of money spent on those games for the next week to the Red Cross’ work in Haiti.

LittleBigPlanet accessory bundle ad references PSP-4000

by MichelButeyko on Dec.20, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Alas, we’ve gone yet another decade without a single jetpack, hovercar, hoverpack or jetcar. We’ve got high hopes for unimaginable technological advancement in the 2010s — for instance, if a recent advertisement for a bundle of LittleBigPlanet -branded PSP accessories that ran in MCV’s latest “Digital Edition” is any indication, we’re thinking that a new model of the old-school, UMD-equipped handheld might not be out of the question. Proudly printed on the ad is a lineup of PSP models the accessories are compatible with — including the PSP-4000. Now, this could just be a mistake on the ad designer’s part, or it could be an accidental hint of things to come.

Rumor: Left 4 Dead 2 demo files name two DLC packs

by MichelButeyko on Oct.29, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

A number of dirt-digging zombophiles have unearthed a pair of suggestive errors buried within the code for the Left 4 Dead 2 PC demo. These error messages are meant to appear after a player has been kicked from an online multiplayer match after failing to load a DLC map that the match host has selected for play. These disabled messages seem to indicate the names of what many now believe to be two DLC releases planned for the future: The “Miracle Pack” and the “Apocalyptic Pack.” Frankly, we think the game’s already got its fair share of the Apocalypse, not to mention plenty of miracles, which is the only way we can explain how four people can survive continuous encounters with a city’s worth of the walking dead

Jonathan Blow hiring ‘full-body motion tracking’ programmer

by MichelButeyko on Oct.26, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything regarding Braid developer Jonathan Blow’s next project, The Witness — however, if a recent post on Blow’s blog is any indication, the ” philosophical, and quiet ” game might be moving in an unexpected direction. According to the post , Blow is “hiring another programmer into the new company, to do very interesting work with full-body motion tracking.” We contacted Blow to see if this new hire would be working on The Witness , and whether the motion tracking technology mentioned is Project Natal. He responded by saying he “can’t talk about this right now,” and added, “it may not even actually happen (depending on whether I can find someone qualified to do it!).” So, there you have it. If you’ve got experience with body movin’ ( body, body movin’ ), it sounds like Blow could use a hand.
