Liked Battle Chess? Meet Battle vs. Chess

by ronaldgates on Mar.12, 2010, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Software, Video Games

Battle vs. Chess appears to bring Battle Chess to a new generation, with a similar hook and a name that just skirts a potential copyright lawsuit. With “upbeat combat visuals & mechanics,” the game sounds like a modern update of the classic chess game that let us watch chess pieces beat the stuffing out of each other. There don’t appear to be any videos showing BvC ’s animations.

Splinter Cell: Conviction merely looks ‘brilliant,’ delayed to make it ‘awesome’

by ronaldgates on Jan.14, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Ubisoft has apparently delayed Splinter Cell: Conviction for “a bit more polish,” the publisher told Eurogamer . Although the common wisdom is that the delay occurred due to the unnaturally packed Q1 of triple-A goodness, a representative for Ubisoft stated, “The game looks brilliant, but we want it to be awesome.” Play this post off, Keyboard Cat Sam Fisher . EA’s Riccitiello predicts fewer titles per year, harder push for digital distribution

by ronaldgates on Dec.02, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

[ EndSights ] Having already implemented major layoffs for a second year in a row , EA CEO John Riccitiello needs to start cutting more nitty-gritty costs. Following up on previous statements about cutting the number of releases per year, the executive tells Reuters that the company will have 40 releases in the next fiscal year, but that around 30 releases a year “wouldn’t shock [him] at some point in the future.” Focusing on fewer, quality titles sounds like the THQ gambit . Another way EA can reduce costs is by cutting down on its packaged goods manufacturing and distribution

by ronaldgates on Oct.09, 2009, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Many franchises attempt to break apart from familiar genres in an effort to expand their fan bases. PS3 Firmware 3.0 troubles spawn class action lawsuit

by ronaldgates on Oct.06, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games

What’s New? For one: a class action lawsuit filed by John Kennedy, who accuses Sony’s 3.0-version PlayStation firmware update of breaching implied warranty and signaling an act of negligence (among other complaints). As detailed by Courthouse News Service , the suit alleges that “thousands” of PS3 owners downloaded the update, only to find that it caused the system to malfunction and suffer damage to hardware

What’s In a Name: Robomodo

by ronaldgates on Oct.05, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games

If you want to watch friends and loved ones pretend to skateboard/fall repeatedly this fall, Robomodo’s Tony Hawk Ride is the only product catering to those admittedly unhealthy urges. Here’s how those monsters came up with the name. When Josh & I first talked about creating this company, I offered up the name because I felt it fit the criteria we were trying to fill: Sounds “fun” (i.e. anybody hearing it would expect to be entertained by our product) Rolls off the tongue & unique Available (i.e. its .com isn’t already spoken for) “Just fits” (i.e.

LGJ: Products LiabilODST

by ronaldgates on Sep.30, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Each week Mark Methenitis contributes Law of the Game on Joystiq (“LGJ”), a column on legal issues as they relate to video games : Something that comes up from time to time in the gaming world is faulty products. Or potentially faulty products. Most recently, it seems to be Halo 3: ODST at the center of the issue (which, for the record, I’ve had no trouble with thus far), but the issue has touched numerous games, including Guitar Hero III , and consoles . While most people might lump all this together into ’stuff that’s broken,’ the reality is it touches two legal topics: warranty and products liability.
