Fable 3 ‘almost at its final edit’ stage, says Molyneux

by shapework on Feb.05, 2010, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Video Games

The head of MGS Europe assuredly has a few more things on his plate than the third game in a franchise he helped create, but in a recent feature on Peter Molyneux at Develop , the British creator calmly pronounced the game to be nearing its “final edit” stage of production. Whether he means “ready for submission to Microsoft” or “we haven’t started polishing it yet” (or, heck, anywhere in between) remains unclear, though we’d certainly like to get our hands on the final product sooner rather than later. Additionally, Molyneux triple dips on his love for Valve, proclaiming Half-Life 2 as his “favourite” game ever (you crazy Brits!) as well as the game he would most like to have worked on, and also notes the developer as the one he most admires (get a room, you two!). And hey, if you’ve been hankering to know his “favourite” album, it’s Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” (Yep, we were kind of disappointed too.) Fable 3 ‘almost at its final edit’ stage, says Molyneux originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 17:30:00 EST

God of War II could have been a PS3 launch game

by shapework on Jan.26, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games

God of War II was almost a PS3 game (at least, before it did become a PS3 game ). In an interview with Game Informer , Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida remembered the internal debate over whether to release God of War II as one of the last big games for PS2 or as a headline title for the PS3 launch. “Many people, including marketing, suggested that maybe it should be moved to PS3,” Yoshida recalled. Certainly, God of War II would’ve bolstered an exclusive launch lineup that was limited to Resistance: Fall of Man and very little else. “We had a lot of debates about it, actually.

Microsoft files patent for user-health-generated Avatars

by shapework on Dec.21, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

It’s okay if you need to read that headline again. It’s pretty confusing. Here’s the gist of it: Microsoft filed a patent in June of 2008 for the automatic generation of an Avatar based on a user’s physical health. The patent application, discovered by 1UP , specifically details an “avatar generator” that “reflects a physical characteristic of the user.” Physical data about the user would be used to “reflect a degree of health of the real person.” In turn, this could be linked to “rewards of capabilities of a gaming avatar, an amount of time budgeted to play, or a visible indication.” In other words, the patent is all about “injecting a degree of reality” into Avatar appearances, thus encouraging users to exercise and maintain a more active lifestyle. Beyond this, the filing also explains that the generator could be used to reflect all kinds of data about a person, including religious beliefs, politics, hobbies, and even intelligence.

Nintendo: NSMB Wii has sold 2 million in US

by shapework on Dec.11, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Yesterday’s NPD announcement that New Super Mario Bros. Wii had sold 1.4 million copies in the November NPD period was impressive. But Nintendo topped it today by noting that, including sales after the NPD cutoff date, the game has reached a total of two million copies. It’s not Modern Warfare 2 or anything, but it is a very strong start for a game that is likely to have a very long tail

Modern Warfare 2’s poor translation, censorship in Japan draws ire

by shapework on Dec.04, 2009, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Video Games

When Square Enix enlisted to localize Modern Warfare 2 for Japan, the publisher went above and beyond the call of duty . The game would be issued a complete Japanese-dialog makeover — whereas the first Modern Warfare localization was simply subtitled — in response to a ” strong desire from Activision to widen the entrance for beginning FPS players,” as Square Enix told Famitsu . However, some gamers are reporting that the extra effort has fallen short, citing numerous translation errors in the localized game. [Insert your Bill Murray joke here.] Additionally, Japanese site My Game Flash has rounded up other complaints about the localization, most notably an alteration to the sensationalized “No Russian” mission.

by shapework on Oct.28, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Podcast, Video Games

Who’s going to play Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted movie ? Well, don’t expect Nolan North to reprise the role for the silver screen. In spite of his stellar performance in the games, North knows he’s not big enough to headline a big budget film like Uncharted

Euro Wii ‘Ambassadors’ to receive keys to the Virtual Console

by shapework on Sep.16, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Eager to show its disconnected patrons that their Wiis can do more than Wii Sports — you don’t even have to eject the disc! — Nintendo has appointed pretty much anyone in Europe savvy enough to visit Wii’s Connection Settings menu an “Ambassador.” Here’s how the “Connection Ambassador Promotion” works: Beginning in October (as seen in Japan ), if you help another Wii owner establish an online connection, you and your incompetent friend will both receive five Nintendo bucks (500 Wii Points). (Presumably, when connecting for the first time, there will be an option to credit an Ambassador.) And if you extend your services to the maximum of twenty previously offline console owners?
