This Wednesday: Matt Hazard brings ‘Blood Bath & Beyond’ to XBLA, PSN on Thursday
by Sironimoll on Jan.04, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Faux video game legend Matt Hazard returns (this time, for real ) in Blood Bath & Beyond , blasting his way onto XBLA and PSN this Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. The 2D side-scroller has the protagonist battling through his “classic” gaming past, fighting “pirates to penguins; lighthouses to laser-wielding astronauts; Mounties to mechanical rhinos” for $15 ( 1200 ). The idea behind Matt Hazard sounds so perfect on paper: take thirty years of video game cliches and mock them. Sadly, as evidenced by Matt Hazard’s first outing, Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard , instead of creating humor from the conventions, it ironically relied on them for the core gameplay — thus, creating a game that invariably could mock itself and was its own punchline

VGA 2009: Tony Hawk talks disappointing sales and future plans
by Sironimoll on Dec.17, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Reviews, Video Games
This past Saturday brought us the Spike TV Video Game Awards and – before experiencing the litany of world exclusives that awaited us inside – we spent some time outside cruising the red carpet and talking (briefly!) to many of the game developers and talent. We squeezed them for information as fast as we could while simultaneously wishing them holiday cheer and good tidings. Yes, it was as awkward as it sounds

by Sironimoll on Nov.19, 2009, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games
In addition to the LucasArts adventure game renaissance and Telltale Games ‘ continued efforts in the genre, Relentless Software is bringing a new episodic adventure series to the PlayStation 3’s digital distribution service this December titled Blue Toad Murder Files . Aside from the handful of screenshots we got with the game’s December 17 release date announcement last month, we had yet to see it in video form until the Euro PS Blog put up a video earlier today.

Pre-order Left 4 Dead 2, get a spiffy Team Fortress 2 hat
by Sironimoll on Nov.03, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Retailers, Video Games
Left 4 Dead survivor Bill’s hat is now available in Team Fortress 2 for those who pre-ordered Left 4 Dead 2 from Steam or “participating retailers.” Though the hat does … apparently nothing, it implies – in the immortal words of Destiny’s Child – “I’m not gonna give up, I’m not gon’ stop, I’m gonna work harder, I’m a survivor .” Some may hold issue with the fact that the Team Fortress and Left 4 Dead universes have collided; however, Valve has explained the phenomena, stating that “while conducting a science experiment on parallel dimensions, Bill’s hat fell off a table into the Team Fortress universe.” Done! That’s all the justification required. Oh, and if Bill’s hat isn’t enough incentive to pre-order the zombie apocalypse survival simulator, know that the game is currently 10% off on Steam. by Sironimoll on Oct.14, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
IGN revealed today that the leaked Tatsunoko vs. Capcom character roster update was almost 100% accurate in predicting the characters added to the North American version (and the upcoming Japanese re-release). Games For Windows getting ‘easier’ for indies, Microsoft eager for multi-touch games
by Sironimoll on Oct.01, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, Windows
Earlier this month, Microsoft announced an initiative to streamline the certification process of games coming to its Games for Windows platform. In doing so, the company effectively offered an olive branch to small developers and publishers who had previously been unable for a variety of reasons — be they financial, time or size-related — to release games on the platform. Perri Munsell, director of Windows consumer product management, told Joystiq today that the relaunch means good things for both the little guys and the big guys. “Now, through the self-certification process, we really allow any developer — indie on up, from one, two-man teams all the way up to a major publisher — everyone receives the same automation tools.” It’s not just a question of making the certification process easier for everyone though, as Munsell says that before, indie devs couldn’t even approach the GFW platform. “It goes beyond ‘easier’ — it makes it possible .” When asked about Microsoft’s criteria for “showcasing” certain games at its events, Munsell says rather unsurprisingly, it has to do with what the company is promoting and how that ties into its plans.
