WRUP: Joystiq’s big PAX East Saturday plans edition
by TepeTrupbrugh on Feb.05, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Podcast, Video Games
This is a time-sensitive reminder that Joystiq will be hosting a Blueberry Muffin Tops breakfast at PAX East , which will have many of your favorite ’stiq editors in attendance. Normally, we wouldn’t mention this until we’re closer to the event date of Saturday, March 27, but with the current state of ticket sales for the convention , we’d like to remind anyone who’d really like to attend that getting a Saturday ticket is essential . Also, the Joystiq Podcast will record live at the show that evening and, frankly, who knows what else we’ll plan between now and then.

Industry survey shows iPhone growth, console development preference
by aherioslio on Feb.05, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone
Alright, alright, calm down — before you break out the bottle of kerosene for a completely baseless flame war, we’re going to point out that the following survey results are from a “comprehensive 55 question survey” of “more than 800 video game professionals from North America and beyond who read Gamasutra, subscribe to Game Developer magazine, or attend Game Developers Conference.” We’d also like to note that the not-quite-recovered economy is likely playing a larger role than we can tell at the moment. All that said, the 2009/10 State of Game Development Survey shows that small development houses (“50 employees or fewer”) have grown seven percent in the last year — a statistic pretty much directly tied to the 25 percent of developers now working on “mobile platforms” (nearly 75 percent of which name the iPhone directly). We’re hoping that, by this point in the post, any potential console warriors have moved on and won’t notice us pointing out the breakdown of development percentage for each home console

We can’t be gaming all the time, despite our best efforts, and from time to time we’ll actually take advantage of the movie-playing abilities on our gaming systems. JBO features our top picks for XBL, PSN, Netflix’s Watch Instantly and Blu-ray each week. Recommendation of the Week: Zombieland (Blu-ray: $39.95, much lower at retailers) What goes perfectly with Zombieland on Blu-ray? Twinkies

PS3 worldwide sales cross 30 million
by daniella on Feb.05, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games
Adding up Sony’s quarterly sales numbers for the PS3, including the 6.5 million Q3 sales it announced yesterday, Shacknews arrived at a new estimate for the console’s life-to-date sales total: 33.71 million units. That’s just about half of the Wii’s most recent total of 67.45 million , and about 86% of the Xbox 360’s recently-announced 39 million . The gap is narrowing! The year-over-year sales of the PS3 are increasing (or, at least, they increased ), with 13 million sold worldwide in fiscal 2009 versus 10.1 million in fiscal 2008. That’s only going to increase in 2010, as everyone is forced to buy a second PS3 so the console will appear in stereoscopic 3D even while no 3D games are being played

Harmonix heads honored in USA ‘Character Approved’ awards
by Simana on Feb.05, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
USA — the television network, not the nation — has selected Harmonix founders Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy as the two most important “New Media” figures in its annual Character Approved Awards. According to USA’s announcement of the 2010 winners , the awards are designed to “honor the real characters who are changing the face of American culture.” Considering we haven’t been to a social gathering in two years that didn’t turn into an impromptu Rock Band party, we think Rigopulos and Egozy are deserving of the honor.

God of War III Ultimate Trilogy Edition: The Ultimate Box
by JeolaClaica on Feb.05, 2010, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Sony Europe has released an image of the European box for the God of War III Ultimate Trilogy Edition — which, like the American God of War III Ultimate Edition , contains another box within. The European packaging is much more colorful (at least much more red) than the North American box, though, and features an all-important acetate window, through which shoppers can gaze upon the majesty of the replica Pandora’s Box that comes with the set. Aside from the colors and the view , the European set also includes one other thing that the American bundle doesn’t: the God of War Collection , which features HD remakes of God of War and God of War II for PS3, and plenty of logos . God of War III Ultimate Trilogy Edition: The Ultimate Box originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 18:30:00 EST.

EA’s latest salvo of media on Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight presents us with both the GDI and Nod’s task-based units’ setups: offense; defense and support. Each is comprised of several different units — an offensive group on the GDI side is comprised of heavy tanks and walkers; the perfect fit for anyone looking to storm a base. On the Nod side, its air support units let players rain hell from above

Fable 3 ‘almost at its final edit’ stage, says Molyneux
by shapework on Feb.05, 2010, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Video Games
The head of MGS Europe assuredly has a few more things on his plate than the third game in a franchise he helped create, but in a recent feature on Peter Molyneux at Develop , the British creator calmly pronounced the game to be nearing its “final edit” stage of production. Whether he means “ready for submission to Microsoft” or “we haven’t started polishing it yet” (or, heck, anywhere in between) remains unclear, though we’d certainly like to get our hands on the final product sooner rather than later. Additionally, Molyneux triple dips on his love for Valve, proclaiming Half-Life 2 as his “favourite” game ever (you crazy Brits!) as well as the game he would most like to have worked on, and also notes the developer as the one he most admires (get a room, you two!). And hey, if you’ve been hankering to know his “favourite” album, it’s Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” (Yep, we were kind of disappointed too.) Fable 3 ‘almost at its final edit’ stage, says Molyneux originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 17:30:00 EST
