Best of the Rest: Alexander’s Picks of 2009
by Unlalflaltibe on Jan.01, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Valkyria Chronicles “BUT THAT GAME WAS 2008!!11one!1!” Well, yes, in the strictest sense. However, word-of-mouth, critical praise and some discounted pricing helped the saga find a place in many people’s lives (and hearts) by mid-2009.

by unsareruime on Jul.31, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
As of this writing, it is past midnight in jolly ol’ England, which means that our dear Jem Alexander is no longer a part of the Joystiq staff. He has left us to go work for … um, actually, I’m not allowed to say, but it’s SO not in NY. Jem’s Britishisms and the way he would say amazing (a sampling of which is found below) will be greatly missed — you have no idea — as a moment of levity the next time we’re banging out stories at 2AM during next year’s E3. We’ve asked Joystiq staffers to say the first word they think of when discussing Jem and here are the results: excitement, adventure, glamour, glitter, fashion and fame.

by Amarikans Psihhlos on Jul.01, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Thanks to Silverlight , Microsoft’s answer to Adobe’s cross-platform Flash standard, Xbox 360 owners will soon be able to experience the thrill of high-definition interactive advertisements . Speaking to MediaPost , Microsoft’s advertising business group director, Sean Alexander, touted the ability for HD ads created using the technology to run in web browsers, on mobile phones and on the fancy-schmancy, multi-touch Surface “table computer” without needing to be re-written. The tech is to be implemented on 360 “within the year,” Alexander said

Mizuguchi, Suda 51 weigh in on E3’s new motion controllers
by CardOfferstOnlyNow on Jul.01, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
In this week’s Famitsu , three major Japanese developers sat down to discuss this year’s E3 and how they feel about the various motion technology displayed. Grasshopper Manufacture’s Suda 51 , Q Entertainment’s Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Level-5 ’s Akihiro Hino all somewhat agree on what they see as the future of gaming. “Hardware-wise, it was all about Project Natal ,” Mr. Suda said, noting his excitement for creating a game specifically based around its technology. “It’s not a shift from 2D to 3D or in the number of polygons, but it’s games trying to open up an entirely new door,” Mizuguchi agrees, continuing, “I thought it would take longer, but it’s happening faster than I expected.” Ironically, when the trio chose the most exciting games for them at E3, the list quickly filled with Western-developed games, from Splinter Cell: Conviction and Assassin’s Creed 2 to The Beatles: Rock Band .
