With America’s Game Developers Conference 2010 only a few short weeks away, it has now been announced that GDC Europe 2010 will be taking place in Cologne, Germany again this year. The conference will open its doors on Monday, August 16 and run until Wednesday, August 18. The event will include a new area, the GDC Europe Business Lounge, which will “host a VIP lounge area for GDC Europe Plus members to convene and conduct business.” Once again, GDC Europe will be taking place alongside GamesCom, which runs August 18-22. Nintendo: Replenishing Wii supply will be a ‘challenge’

by Goploie on Feb.10, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Retailers, Video Games

Nintendo has responded to Joystiq’s inquiry into the current Wii supply issues , with Nintendo of America’s Senior Director of Corporate Communications Charlie Scibetta telling us, “In the short term, replenishing Wii inventories will be a challenge.” He continues, “But we are doing everything we can to satisfy consumers looking to purchase a Wii system.” Analysts have already chided Nintendo for its holiday sales which, despite being record-breaking , could have been stronger had there been more Wii to go around. What makes this situation even stranger is the report from early December that Nintendo actually reduced Wii production going into the holiday.

Nintendo: WiiWare demo program was ‘always’ limited-time offer

by FanAUDI on Feb.10, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

All WiiWare demos were removed from the Wii Shop Channel on January 31. Nintendo of America has confirmed with Joystiq that the WiiWare demo “experiment,” which offered a set of five free downloadable demos through the Wii Shop Channel, officially ended on that date. When asked for an explanation, a Nintendo representative told Joystiq, “From the start, the demo program was always planned to be available for a limited time on a trial basis.” While the demo program was expressly announced as a limited-time deal in Japan, no mention of any cutoff date was made in the original announcement for North America. So, will we ever get to try before we buy again?

Report: CBS rejects Dante’s inferno ad over tagline

by cinkincognock on Feb.02, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

According to The Hollywood Reporter , CBS required some editing to EA’s Super Bowl ad for Dante’s Inferno before it would expose America’s fragile hive mind to it. No, it’s not because of all the demons and the brimstone and stuff, but rather due to the game’s widely-used tag line “Go to Hell.” As you can seen in the clip after the jump, it’s replaced by “Hell Awaits.” The change is likely because of worries about offending conservative viewers, but we’re secretly hoping that Doritos is launching a new super spicy chip during the big game and it just didn’t want Dante copying its line.

Disgaea Infinite visual novel for PSP releases this May

by Jordanhoper on Jan.30, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

We certainly didn’t see this coming. While it may seem strange to doubt the release of another Disgaea game, Disgaea Infinite is not what you might expect. No, it’s not a SRPG. It’s not even a platformer . Instead, it’s a visual novel game — an interactive story-based adventure, akin to the Phoenix Wright series

Rentrak lists top game rentals of 2009

by Fupsenteltemn on Jan.29, 2010, under Blu-Ray, Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Fallout 3 on Xbox 360 tops Rentrak’s list as the most rented game in 2009. The company’s data reveals that the Xbox 360 “dominated” the US rental charts, holding 17 of the top 20 spots. Rentrak states that its tracking system follows “65,000 DVD, Blu-ray Disc and Video Game properties in the brick-and-mortar, online, and kiosk channels across North America .” The original Rentrak release from this morning states that the rankings were based on “spending via US brick-and-mortar rental channel.” We followed up with the group, which clarified that this was a typo and the list also includes online rental outlets, like GameFly . That’s a good thing, otherwise the list would have been: “The Top 20 game rentals by people who still go to stores to rent their games.” Not having online information in there would have made the data a bit …

Supreme Commander 2’s European deployment date in line with America

by Endymarbel on Jan.26, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Supreme Commander 2 is set to storm European retail on March 5 and 19, 2010, on PC and Xbox 360, respectively. The release dates fall within the same week as the North American launch . As we noted before, Gas Powered Games’ real-time strategy sequel will drop right in the middle of a retail war for consumer currency , the likes of which we’ve never seen. The game’s redeeming quality is that as an RTS — available for consoles, as well — it may just survive the 2.8 second life expectancy of a game without massive, effective promotion . Supreme Commander 2’s European deployment date in line with America originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 20:20:00 EST

Nintendo celebrates DS, Wii, software sales milestones in Europe, U.S.

by Bubbalekh on Jan.05, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games

Across two of Nintendo’s biggest markets, the US and Europe, the house that Mario built has managed to get a lot of its hardware and software into customers’ hands, reporting huge sales milestones and a very prosperous December. In Europe , the DS is now the best-selling video game console of all time, surpassing the 40 million mark in the region. The Wii now tops 20 million, becoming the fastest-selling console in the region since its release three years ago. There’s also some data on Nintendo’s games to chew on, including Wii Sports Resort , which sold five million since releasing in July, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii , which just reached 2.5 million units sold.
