Activision CEO Bobby Kotick gets introspective at DICE, shares business regrets
by Apaphespajodo on Feb.18, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Wearing a zippered pullover, jeans and not looking at all like the CEO of Activision Blizzard, Bobby Kotick delivered a deliberately human speech at DICE today. Part autobiographical story about his start in the games business, part contrition, the Kotick who spoke at DICE conveyed the sense of a misunderstood

Now you’ll be able to buy games for your book! Amazon just announced its Kindle Development Kit , which will allow companies (and individuals!) to create “active content” for Amazon’s e-reader device. The examples given in the press release include an interactive Zagat guide, and … games! According to the announcement, mobile publisher Sonic Boom will release “word games and puzzles” for the device — which seems like a natural fit

Pachter: Netflix on Wii won’t matter as much as on other consoles
by sullyslimg on Jan.13, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter doesn’t think the announcement of Netflix streaming on Wii is that big of a deal in growing the rental service’s customer base. Pachter’s perspective is that “fewer than 20 percent” of the US’s 26 million Wii owners are connected to the internet, which is a necessary component to stream movies through the service. In comparison, he believes over 75 percent of Xbox 360 and PS3 users are caught up in the internets. IndustryGamers reports that Pachter expects “some traction” from the Wii announcement, but that it won’t “jump start Netflix activations.” He believes the Nintendo console’s installed base will “embrace the Netflix service only gradually.” With so many consumer electronics receiving the Netflix streaming service, Pachter does believe it’ll “allow Netflix to maintain its prior pace of subscriber additions as new customer additions from the Xbox 360 installed base begin to slow.” Pachter: Netflix on Wii won’t matter as much as on other consoles originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Jan 2010 18:40:00 EST. Do some recon on Spec Ops: The Line with these screens
by delofooma on Jan.08, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Click image to embiggen 2K Games sent over some new screens from upcoming Spec Ops: The Line and, as one can imagine, the shots feature a lot of the same stuff we saw in the VGA trailer last month: sand; dilapidated buildings; and lots of bang-bang shoot-shoot . While producer (and ex-GameSpot EIC) Greg Kasavin played up the appeal of setting a game in a veritable wonderland of architecture (see: neat buildings to shoot dudes in) during a recent interview , we have to wonder if staring at all of these bieges, browns and mustards will become annoying after a while. We guess everyone will find out when the game releases later this year

Alan Wake will stay up late with post-launch DLC ‘episodes’
by OrderTarmadol on Jan.06, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Remedy’s Xbox 360-exclusive Alan Wake , described as “the TV show Lost , as written by Stephen King, and filmed by David Lynch,” by Microsoft Entertainment & Devices head Robbie Bach will — much like Fable II — be expanded upon via additional downloadable episodes. Bach made the announcement concerning the long-in-development title during the company’s CES 2010 keynote this evening, saying, ” story-driven like a TV series , Alan Wake will be told in episodes with even more episodes available on Xbox Live after its launch this year.” Let’s just hope Remedy isn’t taking cues from The Sopranos when deciding how long it will be between the release of the game’s episodes. Alan Wake will stay up late with post-launch DLC ‘episodes’ originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jan 2010 23:28:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds

Leonard Nimoy lending deep, soothing voice to Star Trek Online
by JimBaenGreen on Dec.22, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Last week, we received word that Zachary Quinto , who provided the fresh face for Spock in this past summer’s Star Trek relaunch, would do the voice of Star Trek Online ’s “Emergency Medical Hologram tutorial.” Today, we received further Spock-based news for the title: According to an Atari press release , Leonard Nimoy will narrate the game’s introduction, and can also be heard during cut scenes and other events throughout the game. For instance, he’ll offer a brief congratulation when your first Seaman egg hatches . Of course, this announcement has caused fans of the series anticipate the in-game appearance of “old Spock” — just as Quinto’s involvement brought murmurs of a “new Spock” cameo
