iPhone game devs band together for Haiti relief
by MichelButeyko on Jan.18, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone
It’s said that developers who work on the smallest platforms have the biggest hearts. … OK, no one says that, but we’re thinking about getting it started after reading about App Relief , a coalition of developers donating their proceeds to relief efforts in Haiti, which recently suffered a catastrophic earthquake. Launched by Josh Hernandez, CEO of bitFLIP developer Metamoorephosis Games, the effort is now 10 games strong, with all the developers (so far) donating 100 percent of money spent on those games for the next week to the Red Cross’ work in Haiti.

EA denies Forbes claim over Tiger Woods split
by ApplyForAcardToday on Dec.10, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
With the recent controversy golfer Tiger Woods has found himself embroiled in, Forbes National Editor Michael Ozanian believes that the biggest name in golf is done being a pitchman. Ozanian claims that companies like Electronic Arts , which publishes the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series, will drop Woods “regardless of what they are saying now.” Well, we were actually curious to hear what EA is saying now, so we contacted the publisher. A spokesperson for the company informed Joystiq, “There is no change in our marketing strategy for the franchise

Football Hero mod probably the biggest ‘Hero’ yet
by Atladr on Oct.27, 2009, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Video Games
The next time your friends complain about soccer being boring, you can do something slightly more productive than silently mocking their boorish lack of sophistication. You can show them this video of ” Football Hero ” (after the break), which consists of soccer players kicking balls into a gigantic, vibration-sensitive screen to play Frets on Fire , a freeware adaptation of Guitar Hero’s core gameplay. Then, just for us, make sure you convince them that every soccer match is exactly like this. This is what the God of War Collection will look like on your PS3
by NurlJouff on Oct.16, 2009, under Blu-Ray, Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Undoubtedly, one of the biggest games this holiday for PS3 users will be the enhanced HD ports of the original God of War and God of War II . Considering these two games were among the finest looking titles of the last generation , it should come as no surprise that the visuals have held up quite nicely. The added resolution is appreciated — but even better than that is the smooth quality of the anti-aliasing. Included with the Blu-ray disc will be a voucher for a PSN download of the E3 God of War III demo, y’know the one we called ” God of War in HD .” We suppose that assessment is kind of ironic now, right? Lite iPhone apps now upgradable to full versions via in-app purchases
by lumureriare on Oct.16, 2009, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Video Games, iPhone
One of our biggest complaints with the relatively streamlined iTunes App Store was the user’s inability to upgrade “Lite” applications to their full, paid counterparts through the demo apps themselves. This led to the App Store being cluttered with two versions of nearly every game app, which sent us into fits of obsessive-compulsive rage . Fortunately, Apple has switched its position on in-app purchases, allowing developers to include the option to purchase and unlock the full version of an app (or even DLC) through the lite version’s main menu, folding free and paid apps into one neat, orderly download.

Of course, with this new model, we’re likely to see a lot more app developers attempt to nickel-and-dime iPhone owners with insubstantial DLC

Epic (Mickey) trade: Disney swaps Al Michaels for Oswald
by cindyslimg on Oct.16, 2009, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Video Games
The Game Informer preview of Junction Point’s Epic Mickey is out, revealing not only the game’s art style and Mickey’s retro-inspired look, but details of the storyline and characters as well — definitely worth picking up the mag to see, even if it means another trip into GameStop. One of the most interesting details isn’t really in the game, but about the game. The antagonist, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, almost wasn’t included — kinda hard to be epic without a bad guy, you know? “Disney didn’t own the rights to Oswald,” designer Warren Spector explained to Game Informer . The Epic Mickey project was apparently of such importance, though, that Disney CEO Bob Iger made a deal with NBC Universal and “traded Al Michaels, a human sportscaster, for the rights to a cartoon rabbit.” For what evil purpose was Universal keeping Oswald locked away?

Capcom places BombLink on iPhone
by tattoo_mixa on Oct.09, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games, iPhone, iPod
Capcom is helping the terrorists win with the release of BombLink on iPhone and iPod touch. The $2 app basically asks players to organize bombs in such a way that the explosive devices detonate with the biggest “boom” possible. Talk about irresponsible programming. Seriously, next thing you know there’ll be games where you can pick up hookers, then kill them and take their money
