Xbox 360 Sky Player down, relaunching ‘in phases’ today

by Christina Mariannino on Oct.28, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

While the Xbox 360 Sky Player apparently launched in the UK yesterday as planned, things veered away from the plan almost immediately thereafter. The service was “suspended” shortly after launch, for what must be the best possible problem in Microsoft’s eyes: too many subscribers. “Unfortunately due to the unprecedented levels of simultaneous demand,” a statement on Xbox.com reads, “we did not have the capacity to satisfy all service requests and therefore temporarily suspended all access to the service.” The service is being reinstated in phases today, presumably with some upgrades in place to deal with the demand.

Game Informer analyzes Epic Mickey screenshots

by Sliniupsliano on Oct.28, 2009, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Video Games

In a new feature titled “Anatomy of a Screenshot,” Game Informer dissects in-game screens and details the situations found within. The first title to receive the treatment is the recently revealed — but long rumored — Epic Mickey , from Warren Spector and Disney. The screen above details the upcoming Wii-exclusive title’s heads-up display (HUD), showcasing Mickey’s “persona” status, special items and details on the world around the classic Disney hero. Also, it points out Mickey’s “iconic” ears … you know, in case you missed them.

God of War III demo included on District 9 Blu-ray

by Daleenlinia on Oct.28, 2009, under Blu-Ray, Gadgets, Media, Video Games

If you’re interested in checking out God of War 3 early, but don’t want to play the first two God of Wars again , Sony corporate synergy has a solution for you! The Blu-Ray release of District 9 , due December 29 (a bit later than the God of War Collection ), will include a playable demo of God of War 3 . Once you’ve played through the demo, a making-of featurette will be unlocked (for the game, not the movie). While District 9 and God of War 3 are united in that they’re both things that people presumably want to see, it strikes us as odd that this rather random collection is the first Blu-ray/game demo pairing for SCEA. The Watchmen movie and game actually related to one another in some way, and they came on separate discs . God of War III demo included on District 9 Blu-ray originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 10:30:00 EST.

Science makes Air Guitar Hero a reality

by Sliniupsliano on Oct.28, 2009, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Software, Video Games

University of Washington Ph.D. student Scott Saponas demonstrated his muscle-movement interface for computer systems, by using it to control a familiar application: Guitar Hero . The system appears to guess finger movements by reading the signals from muscles in the forearm.

Seagate and Maxtor Upgrade Capacities

by Jason Rybka on Jan.26, 2008, under Gadgets, Networking, Storage

I just got word from Seagate that they have upgraded hard drive capacities on certain models of their storage solutions, including one product we recently reviewed; the Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini, read the review. In that review one of the down sides to the unit was the low capacity (we reviewed the 80 gig unit). Here is what Seagate had to say:

Due to an explosion of digital content, IDC says demand for storage capacity continues to grow at a rate of nearly 60% per year. In response to this growing need, Seagate and Maxtor continue to deliver solutions that help customers effectively store, manage and share their most precious files (music, photos, video, documents, etc.). The company most recently introduced the following high-capacity products:

- Seagate FreeAgent Pro with Mac compatibility – 1TB capacity
- Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus – 1TB capacity
- Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini – 250GB capacity

We’ll have updated reviews on some of these products shortly.
