Half-Life 2 PC updated with Episode 2 tech, longs for Xbox 360 parity

by Valengic on Jan.05, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

It’s not often that console gamers get to brag to their PC gaming counterparts that their version of any given release is graphically superior; however, 2007’s Xbox 360 release of Valve’s Orange Box compilation included updated releases of both Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One – rebuilt with Episode Two’s fancy new Source engine tech – while the PC releases sputtered on, sans engine enhancements and sans Achievements. Well, that didn’t sit right in one Mr. Filip Victor’s craw, who grabbed his handy coding toolbelt and started hammering away on the original 2004 game adding things like HDR High Dynamic Range lighting (see above screengrab from the comparison video, posted after the break), updated models and textures and, of course, 32 Steam Achievements ( demo video here ). While the legality of this project is certainly dubious, the requirement of both Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode Two should assuage your piracy concerns. Now, whether or not that assuages Valve’s possible concerns with this project remain to be seen.

by beyonikc on Nov.18, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

The upcoming Alternative Edition DLC for Resident Evil 5 is going to include much more than motion controller support for PS3 and the ” Lost in Nightmares ” flashback episode. The latest issue of Japanese mag Famitsu (via Andriasang ) notes that Capcom has two additional surprises for players: new costumes and new characters for a revamped “Mercenaries Reunion” (seen above), as well as an extra, yet-to-be-revealed chapter. All this content will be released as four separate DLC packs : “Lost in Nightmares” Episode – 400 ($5) Costume Pack 1 – 160 ($2) Costume Pack 2 – 160 ($2) Additional TBA Episode – 400 ($5) These prices are only confirmed for Japan, but it’s unlikely the US release will be too different

Krome Studios lays off ‘undisclosed number’ of staff

by fluidethipiet on Nov.18, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

It’s always sad when our layoffs tag claims another victim and, today, Australia-based Krome Studios is the latest. The developer responsible for the PS2, PSP, Wii and DS ports of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed , and who recently wrapped up development on Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Republic Heroes , has been forced to release an “undisclosed number” of its staff, Industry Gamers reports. Krome CEO Robert Walsh attributes the action to declining game sales industry-wide and says the company has “worked really hard to minimize the impact” on its staff. Walsh does give some of these ex-employees hope, stating that he’s currently “pursuing several business opportunities which, if secured, will enable Krome to reemploy some of the staff given notice.” Krome Studios lays off ‘undisclosed number’ of staff originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 11:15:00 EST. Sony attacks BBC Watchdog’s PS3 hardware failure report

by johnbonjovi on Sep.17, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Tonight’s episode of the BBC consumer advocacy program Watchdog will scrutinize a phenomenon which a few of you might be familiar with — the PlayStation 3’s ” Yellow Light of Death .” However, before the episode hit the airwaves, Sony UK Managing Director Ray Maguire issued a six-page response to the Watchdog team, picking apart the program’s investigative methods and questioning their findings. During the episode, the Watchdog team sends Sony a technical report for three PS3s which had succumbed to hardware failure. This is one of Sony’s biggest issues with the report — Maguire explained, “The testing concerned a sample of only three PS3s, which cannot, on any basis, be deemed to be representative of a UK user base of 2.5 million.” According to Maguire, Sony’s got some numbers of its own for hardware failure rates.
