More WiiWare games may get retail release

Nintendo Europe head Laurent Fischer notes that WiiWare is a good place for developers to get products “tested” before going to retail. Speaking with Develop , he says that using WiiWare as a “laboratory” will help developers “polish their software through the WiiWare experience. That is going to provide sales.” We’re actually not aware of too many WiiWare titles that have made the transition to retail , but we can think of a few that might deserve the extra exposure. BioWare not worried about MMO competition, Jedi way cooler than orcs
by Macreed on Jun.19, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Most MMO players are already deeply entrenched within their virtual world of choice — an irrefutable fact that makes it extremely difficult for developers to break into the online realm. Competition between MMO devs is as heated as you might expect — though BioWare isn’t too concerned about other massive titles as it continues to push its upcoming online debut, Star Wars: The Old Republic , through the development process. BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk summarized the developer’s feelings on its fellow denizens of the MMOscape with a simple comparison — in a recent interview with Gamasutra , Zeschuk explained, “If you’re betting on Jedi versus orcs, that’s a good bet.” From what we’ve seen of the game , we’d probably bet on its rich cutscenes and unprecedented capacity for MMORPG storytelling — but, hey, Jedi are pretty great too, we guess.

Former EA COO says EA is in ‘investment mode,’ focusing on digital distribution

Right before hitting the ol’ dusty trail for Playdom , now ex-EA COO John Pleasants sat down with Reuters for an interview all about the future of EA. In it, he speaks to the multifaceted future of EA (especially with regards to business models), as well as the importance of EA’s current “investor mode,” saying the company will announce new deals with various social networking services “some time in the near future.” Though we’re not sure if the recent change in guard from Pleasants to Microsoft alum John Schappert will alter what the ex-COO said to Reuters, things like the recently announced Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online point to “not likely.” This isn’t exactly a dramatic change from statements that Pleasants has made in the past regarding the company’s business strategy, so it remains to be seen whether or not Schappert will steer the EA ship in another direction or stay the course.
