Joseph Olin, president of the The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences , is a busy, busy man this week. Hosting DICE and getting ready for the 13th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards tonight, which will be streamed on IFC.com (and shown on IFC’s cable TV network the following week ). Ellis : So, this one time, me and my buddy, Keith, we saw these infected Valentine cards on the internet. And Keith was like, “Hey, we could make some money selling those.” So he got out his little sister’s box of crayons and made a couple. Then, I was like, “Keith, we ain’t gonna make no money selling five cards.” So he spent a whole year drawing, like, a thousand cards or something. “For James Burt, it’s game over.” Faced with paying a $1.5 million ($1.3 million USD) fine to Nintendo — along with additional court costs — the 24-year-old Australian man who illegally uploaded New Super Mario Bros. Wii to the internet now has to endure the trite (see: “game over” line) and unsympathetic reporting of a local TV show called ” A Current Affair .” Here’s question one: “You do admit that what you did was quite stupid?” BAM . Nintendo Australia’s Rose Lappin claims the pirated plumber code was downloaded approximately 50,000 times after Burt bought a copy from a retailer that failed to adhere to the street date. “It’s no different to stealing anything else,” she concluded, reflecting Nintendo’s unflinching legal stance in the matter.

EA teases Command & Conquer motion comic

Those of you who guessed “comic book” along with us when the Command & Conquer team hinted that their universe was headed to a “new medium” were still stuck in the past of 2009 — here in 2010, comics move like video, and they’re called “motion comics.” Geez, get with the decade! EA’s posted a teaser trailer for the C&C “motion comic,” created in conjunction with Ape Entertainment , and almost literally, all it says is that Episode 1 is coming soon. There’s also a guy in a truck who wants to know the same thing we do: What he’s doing here. Oh yeah, and can we know where “here,” is, too, and what this has to do with the game ? With illegal game downloads in the millions , publishers are desperately trying to find new solutions in the war against piracy. Ubisoft’s upcoming The Settlers 7 will introduce a new DRM model for the company, one that doesn’t require disc authentication and allows multiple installations across multiple systems. “If you own a hundred PCs, you can install your games on a hundred PCs,” Ubisoft’s Brent Wilkinson told GameSpy

Report: Darksiders to never see the light in the UAE, kept ‘under the table’

With little explanation offered (alright, so, basically no explanation whatsoever), the United Arab Emirate states have reportedly banned the distribution and sale of THQ and Vigil’s Darksiders: Wrath of War . According to UAE-based GamesLatest , the game was deemed to “contradict with the UAE’s customs and traditions” — a standard phrase used to near-universally describe banned games in the Middle Eastern states. Unfortunately, that task of enforcing such a ban can be a mighty difficult one. Many retailers in the UAE simply order from wholesalers, bypassing importing laws altogether, and sell their games under the table (and untaxed, might we add).
