Interview: Steam on Mac OS X is ‘the biggest event in Steam’s history,’ John Cook says
by TarleleneJailitixwtv on Mar.17, 2010, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Video Games, Windows
When Valve confirmed Mac support for Steam last week , I emailed the Joystiq team with the following claim: “this is arguably the biggest gaming news on Mac OS ever.” It seems Valve shares the sentiment, as the company’s John Cook – director of Steam development at Valve – calls it “the biggest event in Steam’s history.” He also answered some more of our questions via email, so read on! Joystiq: Just to clarify, Steam users with games already purchased on Windows and that have Mac versions available will have those Mac versions accessible to them immediately in Steam, for no extra charge? John Cook: This is supported by “Steam Play.” We are using this feature to provide cross-platform access to all Valve games to those who already own the PC version. We hope other developers and publishers will use it in the same way. Some blogs have reported that Valve “hates the Mac” – From Gabe: “So, they seem to think that they want to do gaming, but there’s never any follow through on any of the things they say they’re going to do.

Alan Wake rated Teen, five minutes of footage illuminated
by motorrdrive on Feb.18, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
New footage of Remedy’s upcoming mystery thriller Alan Wake has found its way online, showcasing some of the demonic thoughts scrawled on paper by the game’s title character. Five minutes of footage found at French site GameBlog.fr (posted after the break) showcases some gorgeous environments and some of the action we experienced at Microsoft’s X10. Considering half of the Joystiq staff wasn’t even born yet when the game was first announced*, we’re just happy to help Alan Wake figure out what’s happening in the small mid-western town of Bright Falls. But we’re not expecting a gruesome adventure, as the ESRB has rated Alan Wake T for Teen

Hellacious marketing: Dante’s Inferno is in the code
by BestelenViagra on Feb.04, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
It seems the marketing team behind Dante’s Inferno hasn’t burnt out yet, with several ASCII art campaigns popping up in the source code for several popular websites. All direct to the same Dante’s Inferno site . The first image (above) appeared in digg ’s code, as noted by brentcsutoras , and other sites like IGN, GameSpot and Kotaku also had their source code altered to display Dante-relatedl images. It’s one of the cuter, somewhat classier approaches to this title’s marketing, and that makes it oddly noteworthy. If you’re wondering why there’s nothing in our source code (we’re checking now just to make sure) ..

We’ve got impressions of Mass Effect 2 and MAG , a Tip of the Week, Stump JC, a Spoiled Rotten for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories , a mixed sports metaphor, an interview with GoG ’s Tom Ohle, and so, so, so much more. Filed under: Podcasts This week we welcome a special guest to the show, Justin Russo, who won his spot by helping out fellow JPAGger Wesley Johnson to get a dead guy’s gums grafted onto his own. But it’s not just a show about him, we’ve got tons of discussion about the new Assassin’s Creed, hug chat with Ken Levine, alleged Rockstar shadiness and Dark Void . Plus there’s Tip O’ The Week, Stump JC and all the usual garbage. Enjoy. Oh, and thanks to Mike Suszek for the unfunny but inexplicably popular photoshop.

Split/Second destroys the track in May 2010
by Dennyfrickk on Dec.18, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Split/Second now has a much narrower release window, having been winnowed from a vague ‘2010′ to a much more manageable ‘May 2010,’ according to CVG (and confirmed by Joystiq with Disney Interactive). For those who haven’t been keeping up with it, Split/Second is a racing game that lets players use the environment against their opponents. For example, you can cause a whole building to topple directly onto the road, thus changing the course of the race — and possibly crushing a few opponents in the process. In short, it’s great fun, to which our E3 hands-on can attest. Fans of racing and big explosions may want to mark their Michael Bay Swimsuit calendars pronto
