Kitase: Final Fantasy VII remake ‘unrealistic,’ would take too long to develop

by ultrasubaroo on Feb.20, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase recently gave what appears to be the final word on the possibility of a FFVII remake during an interview with TechDigest . “If we were to recreate Final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII , we’d imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together,” Kitase explained, “so it’s looking pretty unrealistic!” Ultimately, the chances of a remade FFVII getting developed are slim, but not non-existent. “If it were possible that we had all the right facilities and the right environment to be able to make and prepare a Final Fantasy VII remake within a year, we’d very much like a go at it,” Kitase said. So, there you have it. If you want to see Cloud Strife in HD, all you have to do is recruit and bankroll a gargantuan Square Enix development team

Sony ‘actively thinking about’ charging for PSN, not offering more Blu-ray game downloads

by Ovettelah on Feb.03, 2010, under Blu-Ray, Gadgets, Media, Video Games

In an extensive interview with IGN , Sony senior VP of Marketing Peter Dille notes that it’s been the company’s philosophy not to charge for PSN, but calls the possibility “something that [Sony's] actively thinking about .” The company has no announcement to offer while it tries to figure out “the best way to approach” any potential changes. Dille also mentions that the company will stick with ad agency Deutch and keep using Kevin Butler as pitchman for its new PS3 ad campaign, which is slowly ( very slowly ) erasing our memories of the crying demon baby . Less likely to make repeat appearances are full, downloadable version of PS3 Blu-ray games (think: Burnout Paradise ).

Iwata: Wii successor needs ’something new’ beyond HD

by lesliegatesc on Feb.02, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

In Nintendo’s recent quarterly investor Q&A , president Satoru Iwata discussed the possibility of an HD-followup to the Wii. ” If asked if making the Wii compatible with high definition — just making it compatible with high resolution — will get players throughout the world to buy it,” he said (as translated by Andriasang ), “I would of course say, ‘Do you think it would sell with just that? It needs something new.’” Note that his statement isn’t a denial of an HD Nintendo system at all . Iwata also addressed the contested statements he allegedly gave to the Asahi Shimbun about a DS successor. The newspaper reported that he said it would have motion-sensing and “highly detailed” graphics, a claim that Iwata later said was ” misinterpreted .” Iwata helped clarify the situation further in the investor Q&A, suggesting that the reporter led him to that statement

Nomura: FFVII remake not happening ‘for the time being’

by vaslav on Jan.24, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Look, Cloud Strife fans, we feel your pain. We do! Honestly . We’re just not exactly shocked to see Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura stating that the possibility of a Final Fantasy VII remake being created as a no go, at least “for the time being.” In a recent issue of Famitsu (translated via Andriasang ) — the Cloud Strife-themed part of a multiweek look at game characters — the character’s creator admitted that he is quite aware “fans are looking forward to an oft-rumored remake of FFVII .” Unfortunately, he also noted “I don’t believe this will happen for the time being.” In a seemingly futile effort to assuage the damage done by that statement, he added, “It’s possible that he will appear in other titles as a guest character.” You mean like Dissidia: Final Fantasy , Mr.

Kamiya keen on returning to Bayonetta, considering spin-off

by Joseph Rybka on Jan.22, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Speaking to Game Informer , Platinum Games’ Hideki Kamiya discussed the possibility of a sequel to Bayonetta . Kamiya noted that the Bayonetta team has “love” for the game, saying, “I don’t see anything wrong with Bayonetta 2 .” (If you’re reading this, Mr. Kamiya, neither do we.) He elaborated that he’d like to approach a sequel “from a different angle, in the form of a spin-off.” Game Informer goes on to speculate that a sequel could star Bayonetta’s rival, Jeanne

Niitsuma: Capcom-developed games starring Tatsunoko characters ‘a possibility’

by ActilireCreep on Jan.20, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Speaking to Joystiq, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom producer Ryota Niitsuma has said that the prospect of future Capcom-made games based on Tatsunoko properties is indeed a possibility. “The reception of the game by Tatsunoko was quite positive,” Niitsuma told us. “[Tatsunoko] saw how we were able to incorporate the characters very successfully into a fighting game, so I think that, in the future, that could lead to us using Tatsunoko characters in other ways.” “I can’t say there’s any concrete information, or there have been any steps in that direction yet, but I think the possibility is there,” he said.

Braid PC getting boxed retail release through MumboJumbo

by MadarasDavosko on Jan.20, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Retailers, Video Games

Casual PC game retailer MumboJumbo games recently announced a partnership with Number None to distribute puzzle-platformer Braid to retailers. No specific date has been given for the game’s arrival at retail, but we do know it’ll have a $19.99 MSRP and will be available at “Walmart, Target, Best Buy, GameStop, Amazon.com, Fry’s, and a number of regional retailers as well.” A representative from MumboJumbo also told us that the game has shipped and should be on retailer shelves “by February 1.” We’re not exactly sure how a $20 release of Braid with a cardboard box is going to compete with the (at very least) less tactile and often cheaper digital equivalent, but we suppose it can’t help to get the game into more markets. Now Target and Walmart game shoppers can be just as confused by its story! Oh we’re just joshin’ — we kid because we love , ya know. Gran Turismo 5 dev says Sony targeting a ‘Summer 2010′ North American release

by girasolslim on Dec.12, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

At a recent press event held for Gran Turismo 5 , associate producer Chris Hinojosa-Miranda let slip that Sony is “eying” a Summer 2010 for the game on this side of the Pacific. Destructoid reports that Hinojosa-Miranda wouldn’t confirm the possibility of DLC for the upcoming title, nor would he commit to there being any difference (content-wise) between the Japanese release this March and the eventual North American release. Allegedly “details are coming soon,” and there’s always that demo coming to PSN — but we were really hoping for the early 2010 release that GT5 head Kazunori Yamauchi had teased a few months back. Erik ‘Pro Plaintiff’ Estavillo assures us he won’t sue anyone else, giving half his money ‘to God’ [update]

by carloschopra on Dec.01, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

[ Image source: Scott Bowling ] Erik Estavillo has been given a handful of nicknames by the press recently – he listed “Professional/PSN Plaintiff,” “The Serial Suer” and a few others when he spoke with Joystiq this morning. He assured us though, time and time again, “That WoW lawsuit , that’s my final lawsuit. So people know, I’m not suing any more companies.” In case you missed it, Estavillo is currently engaged in four separate lawsuits – one with Microsoft , one with Nintendo , one with Sony (in both Federal and State court), and one with Activision Blizzard
