With two studios dedicated to the downloadable space — THQ Digital Studios Phoenix (formerly Rainbow Studios ) and THQ Digital Studios UK (formerly Juice Games ) — Bilson told us THQ plans to release “up to six” downloadable titles within the next year, some based on the company’s biggest brands.

Free White Knight Chronicles weekly quests through June

by Roambcamy on Mar.10, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

You and your trusty White Knight Chronicles monster-slaying team don’t have to repeat the same quests over and over again (though you will , simply for the experience and materials). Every Thursday, starting this week through June, Sony will add new quests to Level-5’s RPG, visible in the world map, and all downloadable for free. Each week, a new permanent quest will be available, along with limited-time quests that you can only download for two weeks. And to mark the occasion, Sony is giving away a 12-inch White Knight figurine to one lucky player that logs into one of six quests during a certain time period

Star Wars: Force Unleashed Hoth DLC out on PSN, coming to Xbox Feb. 23

by CheapPaxilHere on Feb.19, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Looking to get a little more mileage out of your copy of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed before the sequel arrives? As we knew from yesterday’s PSN update , PS3 owners can now download the Hoth mission which came bundled with the ” Ultimate Sith Edition ” re-release of the game — however, 360 owners will be able to follow suit on Tuesday, February 23. The DLC is going for $9.99 on the PSN, leading us to assume it’ll cost Xbox Live Marketplace browsers a cool 800 . The mission on Hoth follows the events of the Tatooine sidequest , and tasks the Secret Apprentice with shutting down the Rebellion and squaring off against Luke Skywalker. Remember, these extra missions are non-canonical — meaning the fate of the aforementioned frostbitten Force-wielder is up in the air.

Sega confirms Sonic 4 developed by Sonic Team and Dimps

by FanAUDI on Feb.18, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Sonic may not team up with other playable characters in his upcoming downloadable adventure, but Sonic Team and Dimps are combining forces to develop Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 . Sega today confirmed to Joystiq that the two developers are working together on the title, plainly stating, ” Sonic 4 Episode I is being developed by Sonic Team in cooperation with Dimps.” The question as to who is actually making the title for Sega was raised when Xbox.com listed Dimps as sole developer on the game’s XBLA info page. This isn’t the first time that Dimps has partnered with a well-known team to develop a game based on a classic franchise — it worked with Capcom to create Street Fighter IV — nor is it a stranger to the Sonic universe, having worked on the Sonic Advance series for GBA, Sonic Rush and its sequel for DS and level design for the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed . [Thanks to Justin for the original tip!] Sega confirms Sonic 4 developed by Sonic Team and Dimps originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Feb 2010 19:40:00 EST. Overheard@DICE: How do you define indie?

by OxireeObjer on Feb.18, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

“I find this talk offensive.” — A half-joking independent developer listening to Chris Taylor of Gas Powered Games and Epic’s Mike Capps discussing being independent studios at DICE. But, how do we define independent? And is it different from being “indie?” We know that Mega 64 has a violent reaction about the latter question. Now, it’s hard to imagine Mike Capps, who swims in a pool of Unreal Engine cash, being defined as independent. He even dryly stated during the conversation, “We became Microsoft five years ago.” However, Chris Taylor, whose company doesn’t have an engine that runs many of the games out there stated, “My children will probably not go to college because of Demigod .” He also mentioned that in 2008 the company went from 125 people to 45 and then had to build back up again.
