PlayStation Move bundles announced, starter kit under $100

by tomkabrick on Mar.11, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

During its GDC press conference , Sony announced that the PlayStation motion controller — newly dubbed PlayStation Move — will launch in several different packages to accommodate the various gamers out there. Sony is planning an “aggressive” marketing campaign around the new peripheral when it launches later this year and — similar to Microsoft’s launch plans for Project Natal — it will treat the launch of the PlayStation Move as a separate “platform launch.” There will be multiple bundles, including a bundle that includes a PlayStation 3 console, the PlayStation Move and the PlayStation Eye. Furthermore, the company will launch a starter pack, which includes a PlayStation Move, a PlayStation Eye and an unnamed game all for under $100.

Microsoft patents EMG muscle controller, is one step closer to Air Guiar Hero

by Valungec on Jan.04, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Our elderly readers may remember all the way back in October of 2009 when we showed you the first video of Microsoft Research’s muscle-based game control interface . While it’d be a safe bet to say that the project is still very much in the prototype phase, the experimental division of Microsoft recently filed a patent application for the “Wearable Electromyography-based Controller for Human-Computer Interface”, effectively bringing us all one step closer to a future with fully realized air guitar . Sure, the interface could be used for “computer stuff” or something we suppose, but what’d be the fun in that? Though, as Engadget points out, we’re not likely to see anything more solid on this in the near future — most Microsoft Research projects are “pretty far from market.” That being said, a combination of muscle sensor-based control and the not quite 1:1 video capture of Project Natal could produce some rather intriguing results

Uncharted 2’s sexual politics examined

by niyiriavatar on Jan.04, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Gamasutra has posted an interesting analysis of the treatment of sexuality in Uncharted 2 . The article mainly focuses on Chloe , which the author, Tom Cross, describes as “a smart, competent, sexually aware pointedly heterosexual female character.” The article further notes that Chloe, in an unusual turn for most video games, “constantly disagrees with and harries the main male character, sometimes out of self-interest and sometimes out of deeply felt connection and respect.” While Cross notes that Uncharted 2 sticks to common story tropes and character arcs, he acknowledges the “incredible quality of Among Thieves ‘ script, story, and acting,” noting that the main cast are “some of the most fun, interesting, inoffensive characters in video games.” We’re inclined to agree. After all, Uncharted 2 didn’t take Joystiq’s top honors for nothing. Uncharted 2’s sexual politics examined originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Jan 2010 13:32:00 EST.

Greenberg: Crackdown 2 coming first half of 2010

by Dypepaignee on Dec.21, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Podcast, Video Games

On Major Nelson’s weekly podcast — with a host left laughing and teary-eyed due to the Xbox head’s dental-related lisp — Aaron Greenberg did some NPD boasting before ruminating on the first half of 2010. After pointing out Mass Effect 2 , Splinter Cell Conviction , and Alan Wake , he confirmed Crackdown 2 as part of Microsoft’s list of “triple-A, exclusive” titles heading to the Xbox 360 during “the first half of the year.” “Those are just the exclusives, that doesn’t include Final Fantasy … there’s no way we had a first half of the year like that last year,” Greenberg added.
