Japanese hardware sales, Feb. 8 – Feb. 14: God Eater edition
by valmbersis on Feb.21, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games
The Japanese gaming hardware market didn’t do too much movin’ and shakin’ this past week, though the software sales throne was usurped by a new PSP release from Namco Bandai: God Eater . Given the game’s Monster Hunter -esque nature, we’re not surprised at its success — still, we find ourselves perplexed by that title. We did a little research and learned that, yes, gods can be eaten, if prepared properly. First, you need to go to the “gods” aisle of your local Whole Foods, and pick the deity you’d like to feast upon. We’d suggest something from the “Ancient Greek” collection, as they possess a delightful Mediterranean zest that your guests will rave about, and have historically proven to be easily digestible.

EEDAR: Game sales slowdown turned around in September
by beyanikc on Oct.09, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games
2009 hasn’t been the best year for the games industry. Month after month, we hear reports of reduced sales figures , company closures , and layoffs . Things may be turning around, though, as EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich believes software sales during September 2009 have actually gone up from 2008, the first time in seven months thanks to strong sales of Halo 3: ODST , Wii Sports Resort , Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 , Madden NFL 10 and Batman: Arkham Asylum

NPD predicts PS3 sales to increase by 40-60% post price drop
by Pydaysnaw on Aug.21, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games
The NPD Group, famed tabulator of video game hardware and software sales, says it sees the new $299 price point of PlayStation 3 contributing to a significant sales boost for the system. “We would expect to see in the range of a 40% to 60% unit sales increase when September sales are reported,” NPD analyst Anita Frazier told InformationWeek . We’ll see how accurate of an estimate that was when the September NPD data hits mid-October. Frazier added, “The $299 price point is important to getting to a point where the next segment of price-conscious consumers can jump into the market and it most certainly will re-energize sales of the platform.” So, basically, a cheaper PS3 will sell better because people are more likely to take the plunge at a cheaper price

Tony Hawk Ride comes with padding for your hardwood floor
by alcotamatte on Aug.21, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Activision will ship Tony Hawk Ride ’s skateboard peripheral with some extra padding in the box for those without carpets to place it on. A company representative told Joystiq at GamesCom today that the board will ship with “two strips, stickers,” but couldn’t precisely describe the thickness or provide an example. He implied the strips would run along the long flat bottom on both sides, which still makes us nervous for folks with hardwood floors if they — or a rambunctious group of children — attempt an ollie with the peripheral. For the record, the rep told us the “recommended surface [to play on] is carpet.” We asked the rep if the company plans to introduce a prophylactic that could cover the bottom of the board, but were told, “[We] haven’t decided on that.” Assurances were made that the board has gone through lots of durability testing — even though it’s not the board we’re worried about.

Nintendo released its latest financial earnings report for the period ending June 30 (Q2 to us, but fiscal Q1 to those business types at the house Mario built) … and it could’ve been better. Don’t be fooled: Nintendo still managed to make profits across the board, but compared to the same period last year, profits weren’t nearly as dramatic. First, let’s talk DS.

Mass Effect premieres at No. 3 spot in Japan
by TakoTakoBurito on May.29, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games
Looking over Media Create ’s weekly Japanese software sales chart for May 24 reveals something distinctly non-Japanese is mucking up the list. BioWare’s space opera Mass Effect for Xbox 360 premiered in the number three spot, having sold 18,000 copies. Sure, that’s less than half of Pro Yakyuu Team o Tsukurou 2 , but good on the western RPG for even charting. Mass Effect released in the Very-Near West in 2007 and — believe it or not — actually has a sequel in the works. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, Sloan to Michael: Nazo No Monogatari was in the number one spot with 44,000 units.

New Nintendo hardware coming when the company finds a ‘very interesting idea’
by CardsBigLoverON on May.22, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games
At least, that’s according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata , speaking to a sharp-tongued investor during the company’s quarterly financial results briefing question and answer session. When asked about the longevity of the current Nintendo hardware on the market, Iwata said, “As soon as a new hardware is completed and introduced to the market, a team is established within the company which starts reviewing what the next hardware will be.” He claims entire hardware pieces have been scrapped in favor of finding a “very interesting idea that can make people all over the world to feel like purchasing [it],” rather than releasing products all willy nilly — like a few items from Nintendo’s past . Interestingly, the man also admits to lacking Japanese third-party support for Wii, saying, “Nintendo thought that the situation would change in about two years after launch [for the Wii and third party software support] … While our assumption turned out to be correct with the portable system, it did not progress as we anticipated for the domestic home console market.” Considering the considerable Monster Hunter support Capcom has thrown into the proverbial ring, we imagine that next year’s third-party support for the Wii in Japan has been bolstered just a bit .
