iPhone App Store tops 100K items, 2 billion downloads

by partsunker on Nov.04, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone

Apple’s App Store has attained over 100,000 fart simulators apps and blown by the two billion download mark. GI.biz reports that games make up 19.6 percent of the store’s content. EA Mobile VP Travis Boatman notes that the store, which is now available in 77 countries, has allowed his company to make high quality games that “have been a huge success with customers.” If Gameloft’s sales figures are any indication, the App Store shows no signs of slowing down in the game department

Closing Game Crazy stores begin clearance sales this weekend

by BestTortureVideos on Sep.30, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

The 200+ Game Crazy stores expected to close by the end of October will begin a liquidation sale, starting this weekend. Locations expected to shutter have received boxes and a list of items that are to be sent back for redistribution, which allegedly includes “all systems, major first party accessories (controllers, memory, etc).” The “majority” of games released within the last year will be also be sent out, “both new and used.” Several employees have commented that closing stores will likely be “pretty bare” by the time the sale starts. The timetable for the liquidation, corroborated by several sources: 10/3-10/9: 30% off everything in the store 10/10-10/16: 50% off everything in the store 10/17-Closing: 80% off everything in the store There doesn’t seem to be a consistent date for when the stores will close, but we haven’t heard of any location staying open beyond October 27. We continue to work on getting a master list of which stores are closing, as well as a list of items sent back for redistribution. Request for official comment from Game Crazy corporate on several issues, including what customers with pre-orders at closing stores should do, have gone unanswered.

by myfloverty on Sep.23, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

We don’t do a lot of critiquing of controllers, we know, but as stacks of them continue to pile up at HQ, it occurred to us that you might be as daunted in the store aisle as we are staring at this pile of plastic. So, in the spirit of making you a more informed consumer, here’s a look at the Rocketfish Rapid Fire PS3 controller. Japan’s PlayStation Network offering PC Engine games

by bacikap on Jul.15, 2009, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Video Games

The Japanese PlayStation Store features a ridiculously huge selection of old PlayStation games, especially compared to the paltry selection on the American store. Now, it’s getting old games that weren’t even on the PlayStation, in what appears to be a tentative step toward a Sony Virtual Console. Sony announced that four PC Engine (Turbografx-16) games will be available on the Store today: Bomberman ‘94, New Adventure Island , Sengoku Mahjong, and Devil’s Crush , each for 600 yen, roughly the same price these games command on the Wii’s Virtual Console. The PC Engine Game Archives will be playable on PSP and PS3, which means we’ll be able to take Devil’s Crush on the go for the first time since the TurboExpress — thus elevating the PSP to the best system since the TurboExpress .

There are 13,000 iPhone games now

by shapework on Jul.08, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone

You know how your birth was a miracle, because of the odds against a specific sperm fertilizing your mom’s egg? Now that there are 13,000 frigging games on the iPhone, how far are we from a comparable setup in the App Store? How long until the simple act of playing The Moron Test rather than other games is considered a miracle in and of itself

Floppy copying to the next level: MC Double Def DP returns

by quattakealert on Jul.08, 2009, under Gadgets, How To, Media, Software, Video Games

Okay, folks, we’ve got something huge for you past the break. You remember those PSAs that requested you not copy that floppy ? Well, it’s going to a whole ‘nother level now, because MC Double Def DP is back with a teaser for his new anti-piracy video. Apparently his rhymes and flashy outfit didn’t do enough the first time around, so he’s come back (and learned how to fly) to spread the word in a new video, the full version of which will be released sometime this summer. So kids, don’t copy that! What?

Rolando almost removed from App Store

by JamesTKirk on Jun.30, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone, iPod

This weekend, ngmoco announced plans to remove the original Rolando from the iPhone/iPod Touch App Store, to allow the sequel to launch on July 1 without competition from its own predecessor. However, in response to a fan outcry, the company has decided not to delist the platformer. Before the announcement of the change of plan, Offworld ’s Brandon Boyer speculated that the delisting was designed to create “artificial scarcity” for the title, and enticing one final rush of downloads before the game disappeared — and then making the title available once again when the sequel’s sales dropped. In addition to canceling the removal of Rolando , ngmoco has reinstated Topple to the App Store, a game that had also been removed to make room for its own sequel.
