Australian Classification Board vs Aliens Vs Predator
by FreeAntivirusOn on Dec.04, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
It may not have acid blood or infrared vision, but the Australian Classification Board has won its battle against Rebellion’s upcoming Aliens Vs Predator game. “The game contains first-person perspective, close-up depictions of human characters being subjected to various types of violence, including explicit decapitation and dismemberment as well as locational damage such as stabbing through the chest, mouth, throat, or eyes,” the board reports. Apparently, the game’s excessive gore and violence exceeds the requirements for a MA15+ rating. Without an option for an R18+ rating, Aliens Vs Predator becomes the latest game to join the ever-growing list of essentially “banned” games in the territory.

Eidos dissolved into ‘Square Enix Europe,’ layoffs likely
by Usenrereplorp on Jul.07, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
It’s a brand! Square Enix today welcomed (tentatively named) Square Enix Europe into the world; an “efficient and powerful” newborn division that looks just like Eidos’ worldwide studios combined with various European sales and marketing personnel from existing Square Enix and Eidos lineages. Current Eidos CEO Phil Rogers has been selected to raise the baby branch, which replaces Eidos as a publishing label, though the Eidos brand will live on through its studios’ credits. Additionally, Eidos’ North American marketing, sales and distribution operations have been delegated to the territory’s Square Enix office, which is led by John Yamamoto. Of course, the icky part of Edios’ arranged marriage to Square Enix and the subsequent birth of Square Enix Europe is the anticipation of an unknown number of layoffs. “Unfortunately we are expecting some jobs to be impacted directly by this in both Europe and North America,” an Eidos spokesperson confirmed

Epic Games Korea opens to work closely with local devs
by Totsdyday on Jun.29, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Rumors, Video Games
Epic Games has opened a new subsidiary in Seoul, Korea, with plans to provide licensing services and support resources to development teams using its Unreal Engine. Epic Games Korea will be led by Ray Park, formerly the business and strategy development manager for Microsoft’s in-game advertising company, Massive, Inc . While Epic Games has provided its Unreal Engine to teams in the territory for over five years, Park states the opening of a Korean subsidiary signifies Epic’s “desire to collaborate more closely with the [local] game development community.” Jay Wilbur, Epic Games’ vice president of business development, noted Epic Games Korea would serve as “a hub for Unreal Engine access, knowledge and support in the Korean marketplace.” Rumors of developer Silicon Knights moving to Korea in search of the support it claims to have never received from Epic Games could not be confirmed … because we made it up for the sake of a bad joke. Konami registers ‘Genso Suikoden’ in US
by Christina Mariannino on Jun.29, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Late last week, Konami registered the title Genso Suikoden with the United States Patent and Trademark office. While no further details are available, the filing may be one of many different possibilities: a new game in the series (known simply as Suikoden in North America), a remake of the original Suikoden or a US release of the poor-selling Japan-only PSP compilation, which included slightly enhanced versions of Suikoden I & II . The nearly 15 year old series has been getting quite a push from Konami in recent months.

Muzyka: BioWare and Mythic could collaborate
by prapear on Jun.29, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
It’s nice to see that the fantasies we had of the newly merged BioWare and Mythic Entertainment living, loving and playing together under one roof Brady Bunch -style aren’t that far off. Ray Muzyka (he’s the Greg Brady in our metaphor) says that, while no collaboration between the two powerhouses is in the works, “in the future there could be co-development. … I know the guys at Mythic, and in Edmonton, Austin, and Montreal are all really excited about this.” Now, we just have to hope Drew Karpyshyn can avoid breaking Carrie Gouskos ‘ nose with a football before her big date with Doug.
