Borg soon assimilating Star Trek Online in upcoming content update
by BeaxeklyGuaky on Feb.13, 2010, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Video Games
A recently added hub page on the official Star Trek Online site has revealed that the nefarious Borg will soon make first contact with the MMO’s players in an upcoming free content update, which will be rolled out over the next two months. The patch will add a series of high-level episodes (that’s STO -speak for “quests”) to the game which will throw players into a number of ground and space conflicts with the cybernetic species, leading up to a climactic raid encounter with the Borg Queen. You can get an idea of the formidable foe you’ll be facing off against in the video above and the gallery below. As a special protip from us to you, here’s an instructional video which reminds prospective Borg-fighters exactly where the line must be drawn.

Team Fortress 2 update adds Highlander mode
by bg-adult-king on Feb.04, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
It’s indicative of Valve’s creativity that we don’t play Team Fortress 2 , but we still get excited about the game’s hilarious updates. In its most recent patch, TF2 received the new “Highlander” mode , in which teams are composed of nine players — but each team can only have one of each class. In other words, “There can be only one (Spy, Sniper, Heavy, etc.).” This not only sounds like an interesting new mode, but it also gives us occasion to link to the intro for the Highlander television series , which scientists recently concluded is the coolest intro sequence in the history of mankind .

Bayonetta PS3 patch adds hard drive installation option
by NicArcamsNeem on Jan.27, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Sega of Japan announced that it will release an update for the PS3 version of Bayonetta tomorrow, which adds an “Install” item to the game’s main menu. The patch, first tentatively announced in November , is intended to cut down the long load times that have perturbed Bayonetta’s PS3 players. The update doesn’t mean the PS3 game will have achieved total parity with the Xbox 360 version — visual discrepancies , like frame rate issues, will still persist — but at least Sega has now taken one step towards improving the experience on PS3. The Bayonetta update has only been confirmed for Japan, but its release just happens to fall on this Thursday, when the PlayStation Store updates worldwide, so we wouldn’t be shocked to see it arrive everywhere tomorrow.

Darksiders screen-tearing patch out tomorrow
by Pydaysnaw on Jan.26, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Starting tomorrow, the screen-tearing present in the Xbox 360 version of Darksiders will (hopefully) be a thing of the past, as the game’s official blog reports the patch will be available for download starting tomorrow. You’ll find the update available starting tomorrow at 2am PT (5am ET). We’d like to be a bit more excited about it, but knowing that everyone ever in the world will eventually succumb to the apocalypse … well, we’re finding it a bit difficult to get pumped about an update to some video game

Left 4 Dead 2’s Versus mode getting bots, auto-spawn tweaks
by kosmetochka on Jan.23, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Question: What’s the only thing scarier than a looming horde of normal-speed zombies? Answer: A looming horde of normal-speed zombies with robot brains . That’s the kind of nightmare we’ll soon be facing once Valve puts the finishing touches on an update for Left 4 Dead 2 , which will add Infected bots to the game’s Versus mode to help balance out one-on-one games. In addition, Valve’s doing some tweaking to the zombie auto-spawning which occurs during the finale events in Versus mode

Star Trek Online beta gets huge update, adds more Nimoy
by MozeKlosedq on Jan.21, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
The MMO-developing band over at Cryptic has released an absolutely massive update to the Star Trek Online open beta. There are literally pages of fixes and changes, though Cryptic has thankfully distilled the major “headline” changes into a few bullet points: The level cap has been removed, which should be music to the ears of the pre-release power levelers out there. Cardassian and Romulan space is now accessible to Federation players, too, and there are some changes to bridge officer mechanics.

PSA: Scrub your gaming console’s memory before selling
by alexefffell on Jan.21, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Usually, when we label a headline as a “PSA,” it’s in a joking manner; say, “PSA: Bacon is delicious, good for you.” However, we’re pretty sure this post constitutes a legitimate public service announcement: Ars Technica recently published an article that the frequent trade-in-ers among us should probably read. In short, if you’re not erasing your consoles’ hard drives before trading them in, there’s a pretty good chance you could be robbed blind . (Or at least robbed astigmatic.) Seriously, if you’re thinking about trading in or pawning one of your gaming consoles sometime soon, follow the helpful tips provided in the Ars piece

Torchlight gets big Steam update, half-price weekend
by Byasheron on Dec.19, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games
Valve knows you , conservative Steam user. You’ve been holding out for a discount on the already low-priced Torchlight from Runic Games, using the game’s lack of Achievements and Steam Cloud support as an excuse to do so, haven’t you? Haven’t you?! It’s alright (and we’re sorry for yelling)! But we had to get your attention to tell you that Steam’s benevolent overlords are already thinking a few steps ahead, adding the aforementioned Cheevos and Cloud support in an update last night as well as dropping the game’s price by 50% for the duration of the weekend. For $9.99, you can venture into the land of Torchlight and click to your heart’s content — there’s even a demo if you’re so inclined

MS enables child accounts for 360 Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm
by beyanikc on Dec.09, 2009, under Features, Gadgets, Media, Video Games
When Microsoft rolled out Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm support for the Xbox 360, a number of users were less than impressed. Specifically, those with child Xbox Live accounts were not allowed to use any of the new applications. Outside the US, Microsoft has now released an update that allows child accounts to access these features, so long as parental permission is given. Major Nelson advises users to set each application to log in automatically upon first activation. Otherwise, those with child accounts will be prompted for parental permission every time the application is launched
