GDC: This is what Unreal Engine 3 on iPhone looks like

by TimurIvanovich on Mar.11, 2010, under Gadgets, Mac, Media, Video Games, Windows, iPhone

Unreal Engine 3 on the iPhone … it looked better in person! While we’ve yet to see Unreal Engine 3 ported to Nintendo’s Wii or Sony’s PSP, Epic did undertake the considerable task of squeezing its seemingly ubiquitous middleware platform onto Apple’s similarly ubiquitous iPhone. According to Epic’s Josh Adams – Epic Games’ senior console programmer – that could be due to fundamental hardware limitations in the other platforms. You see, the iPhone 3GS has a PowerVR SGX graphics processor which supports programmable shaders. According to Adams, “Programmable shaders are something UE3 is pretty much dependent on.” Though you’re probably most familiar with Unreal Engine on Windows, Xbox 360, and PS3, Adams says the engine also runs on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform, on Linux, and on Mac, though (Adams notes) “we haven’t shipped any games on those platforms yet.” Adams says the iPhone port was “a fun ‘Can we get UE3 onto the iPhone?’ kind of project.” Though Adams’ presentation was exceptionally technical – this is the Game Developers Conference, after all! – it’s fascinating to hear about the technical underpinnings and workflows that result in this type of outcome.

PlayStation Move sub-controller: Don’t call it a Nunchuk

by abuffnuasse on Mar.11, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games

Click for little-big size In case this is your first visit to Joystiq, know that Sony has dropped major megatons this evening at its GDC press conference — as well as one very small megaton: the PlayStation Move “sub-controller.” What you see above is the little brother (if you will) to the main ice cream cone-esque Move wand and the enabler of all things analog stick-controlled. As per Sony’s announcement of Move, the sub-controller attachment is intended to “expand the game play options that PlayStation Move games can offer,” and — unlike Nintendo Wii’s Nunchuk controller — it will connect wirelessly to the console via Bluetooth. We’ll have our hands-on with the PlayStation Move (and the sub-controller) for you later tonight. For now, ogle the high-res images in our gallery below. Interview: Microsoft on integrating Xbox Live into Windows Phone 7 Series

by InhictShihoom on Mar.10, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, Windows, Zune, iPhone

Windows Phone 7 isn’t just Microsoft’s attempt to compete against Apple’s iPhone. It’s also the introduction of the first portable Xbox platform. During GDC today, we talked to Xbox Live GM Ron Pessner and XNA Game Studio manager Michael Klucher about how games integrate into the mobile platform and what gamers and developers can expect in the future. For the purpose of this interview, Pessner and Klucher merged into one entity (they spoke over each other a lot!) to answer our questions: Microsoft plans to separate games that do and don’t support Xbox Live functionality on Windows Phone.

Codemasters hits the track this September with F1 2010 for PC, Xbox 360 & PS3

by John.griew on Mar.10, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, Windows

[I F1 2009; Wii] Having dominated the rally track with DiRT and DiRT 2 , and taken a lap around the street-racing arena with GRiD , Codemasters has announced it’s now tossing its hat into the Formula One ring with F1 2010 . Yeah, we kind of expected some weird capitalization, too. It’ll run on Codemaster’s EGO Game Technology Platform engine, so at least we know it’ll have that in common with its predecessors

Shattered Horizon is free to play this weekend on Steam

by CardsBigLoverON on Feb.20, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, Windows

Independently-developed FPS Shattered Horizon isn’t the most high profile action game on the market right now, but it’s got two things going for it which we’re betting will capture your attention. The first is that until 4 p.m. EST tomorrow, you can download and play the game for free over Steam . It requires DirectX10 and Windows Vista or 7 to play — but if you’ve got the tech specs to run the game, you can give it a free trial run until tomorrow afternoon. Oh, the other thing?

Windows Phone 7 announced, includes Xbox Live support

by ReplicaWatchesOpin on Feb.15, 2010, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, Windows, Zune

Well gang, it’s been a long time coming, but it seems we’re finally going to get the Live Anywhere integration Microsoft began teasing four whole years ago. We’re finding it awfully difficult to be jaded, however, as the mobile counterpart to Xbox Live will make its debut on the recently announced Windows Phone 7 — a sleek little device which we’re periodically switching between browser tabs to ogle. Click past the jump to see a demo of the phone’s capabilities. According to a Microsoft press release , the Xbox Live integration on Windows’ new mobile platform “delivers the first and only official Xbox LIVE experience on a phone, including Xbox LIVE games, Spotlight feed and the ability to see a gamer’s avatar, Achievements and gamer profile.” We’ve contacted Microsoft to find out exactly what types of games are going to be offered on the device.
