Rolando almost removed from App Store
by JamesTKirk on Jun.30, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone, iPod
This weekend, ngmoco announced plans to remove the original Rolando from the iPhone/iPod Touch App Store, to allow the sequel to launch on July 1 without competition from its own predecessor. However, in response to a fan outcry, the company has decided not to delist the platformer. Before the announcement of the change of plan, Offworld ’s Brandon Boyer speculated that the delisting was designed to create “artificial scarcity” for the title, and enticing one final rush of downloads before the game disappeared — and then making the title available once again when the sequel’s sales dropped. In addition to canceling the removal of Rolando , ngmoco has reinstated Topple to the App Store, a game that had also been removed to make room for its own sequel. Gaming accessories headed to iPhone (maybe with buttons!)
by DupeDactuch on Jun.19, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games, iPhone, iPod
Undeniably, Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch have become major players in the mobile gaming market. It seems like every developer under the sun is working on iPhone / iPod game of some kind. There are lots of games out there, and a rising number of them are pretty good, but the iPhone / iPod has thus far been devoid of another major aspect of the game industry: Third-party peripherals.

PopCap’s $1 Peggle sale on App Store a hit, specials for other titles ‘TBD’
by Agokbomma on Jun.15, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone, iPod
PopCap’s Peggle sale on the App Store was clearly another blow to the productivity of thousands (millions?) of lost souls. A representative for the publisher told us, “We sold nearly as many units in the three or four days of the sale as we did in the preceding three weeks .” MTV’s Multiplayer takes note of the deeper politics of the App Store sale and Peggle ’s success, which saw the app move on the sales chart from #60 to to #1 during the sale. PopCap tells us it’s still trying to determine what the right price is for games on the iPhone/iPod Touch, expressing that the “App Store is still kind of an experimental arena or environment for anyone who is making products there.” When asked if the company plans a similar sale for any of its other highly addictive titles, we were informed that’s still “TBD.” PopCap’s $1 Peggle sale on App Store a hit, specials for other titles ‘TBD’ originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 16:45:00 EST. Pachter apologizes for comments about PSPgo’s rip-off price
by REMERONcheapbuy on Jun.12, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone, iPod
Michael Pachter has stated he “sincerely” regrets commenting that Sony is ripping off consumers with the PSPgo’s $250 price point. In an interview with IndustryGamers , Pachter takes the opportunity at the end to say that he doesn’t believe Sony is doing anything nefarious and has “the right to price its products at a point that they think is competitive.” He states the company is pricing the handheld to be competitive with the iPod Touch and that the PSPgo “arguably has much more value than the Apple product.” Hmm, as much as we respect Present Pachter’s opinion, Past Pachter was a little more on the ball with the consumer’s perspective of the PSPgo’s pricing. Past Pachter noted, “The $169 PSP-3000 is a profitable device — the disc assembly, for a UMD, costs more than 16 gigs of flash does. So this new device doesn’t cost them as much as the PSP-3000 and they jack the price up $80?” It seems Past Pachter was viewing the product through consumer eyes, while Present Pachter is in business mode and wearing the glasses of the Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. Game Crazy releases useful retail app for iPhone
by adol77dai51 on Jun.12, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone, iPod
In the madness of E3 , retailer Game Crazy released a nice little app for the iPhone/iPod Touch. The impressive little program gives all the standard info we’d expect, but a nice touch is that it also gives users the current trade-in values and prices for used titles, there’s even the option to view trailers. The app is free and the only super useful function we noticed it’s missing is the ability to give real-time information of titles in stock at stores.

id brings all-new Doom Resurrection to the iPhone ‘next week’
by bacikap on Jun.10, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games, iPhone, iPod
Sure, the all-new iPhone 3G S was shown off to throngs of drooling consumers on Monday – wowing the geek-set with its newfound OpenGL ES 2.0 support (your lousy iPhone 3G only supports OpenGL ES 1.1!) – but don’t expect id Software’s just announced title, Doom Resurrection , to be a 3G S-exclusive. Id’s John Carmack told VentureBeat that he’s “happy with the faster iPhone 3G S” but “he is also focused on making sure that his games run on the widest number of iPhones.” Translation: Doom Resurrection won’t be 3G S-exclusive. (Speculation: id could make two versions of Resurrection : one 2.0-compatible and another 1.1-compatible). But, where were we … oh, yes! Doom Resurrection ! This sure sounds like the ” graphical tour de force ” he promised to bring to the iPhone

Pachter says Sony is ‘ripping off’ consumers with PSP Go
by JamesTKirk on Jun.09, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPod
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter hates the PSP Go . Alright, alright, he doesn’t quite hate it, but he does despise its price point. On a recent episode of Bonus Round , Pachter matter of factly states, “$249 is too much. Period.” He goes on to say that while the handheld is priced to compete with Apple’s $229 8GB iPod Touch, it doesn’t deliver the iTunes App Store or downloadable music from iTunes (as conveniently, at least, as the iPod Touch)

Microsoft unveils Zune HD, Zune marketplace headed to Xbox 360 [update]
by steaseaverrar on May.26, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Software, Video Games, Zune, iPod
The cat’s out of the bag on the Zune HD , with Microsoft confirming the handheld media device’s existence and it’s intent to go touchscreen-to-touchscreen with the iPod Touch this fall. Our technomigos at Engadget have full details on the new Zune — including word that Microsoft is doing away with the current Xbox Live video marketplace in favor of the Zune marketplace. How this will work exactly won’t be fully revealed until E3, where Microsoft promises that attendees will learn “how Zune integrates into Xbox LIVE creating a game-changing entertainment experience.” This integration could very well be related to the hinted-at 360-Zune team-up we posted about last December.

Reuters: Capcom has ‘more than 10′ iPhone games planned for FY09
by Thalaamultamp on May.21, 2009, under Gadgets, Media, Video Games, iPhone, iPod
It’s sounding like tap-shooter Resident Evil: Degeneration is just the tip of the iPhone-game iceberg for Capcom. Reuters reports that the company’s mobile division intends to release “more than 10″ titles on the portable platform by the end of March 2010. The announcement was made by Capcom chief financial officer, Kazuhiko Abe, at the news organization’s Global Technology Summit in Tokyo. Capcom has already released Mega Man 2 for iPhone/iPod touch in addition to last week’s RE title. While more of the company’s classics would be a welcome addition to the App Store lineup, we can only hope they’ll benefit from feedback on the absurdly difficult-to-control MM2.
